Is a Child’s Chiropractic Adjustment the Same as an Adult’s? Not Even Close.

Gentle chiropractic care for infants, toddlers, and kids in Denver. Dr. Maggie McInnes explains how pediatric adjustments support nervous system

It’s one of the most common things we hear from parents when they first bring their child in: “Wait — you’re not going to crack them like you do adults, right?”

We always smile at this. And the answer is: absolutely not.

Pediatric chiropractic is its own specialized discipline. The techniques, the pressure, the goals, and even the philosophy behind adjusting a child are fundamentally different from working with an adult body. If you’ve been curious about chiropractic care for your child but hesitant because you weren’t sure what it actually involves, this post is for you.

Why Do Kids Even Need Chiropractic Care?

Before we get into the how, let’s talk about the why — because this surprises a lot of parents.

We tend to think of chiropractic as something you seek out when something hurts. But from a vitalistic perspective, chiropractic care isn’t primarily about pain. It’s about the health of the nervous system — and the nervous system begins developing long before a child ever reports a backache.

The birth process itself, however beautiful, is one of the most physically intense experiences a human body ever undergoes — for both mother and baby. Even in an uncomplicated vaginal birth, significant forces are placed on the infant’s cervical spine and cranium. In assisted deliveries involving forceps or vacuum extraction, or in cesarean births, those stresses can be even greater.

These early stresses can result in subtle misalignments — subluxations — in the infant’s spine that create interference in the nervous system. A baby can’t tell you their neck feels stiff or that something is off. But they may express it through difficulty latching, colic, reflux, disrupted sleep, or general fussiness that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause.

As children grow, falls, tumbles, sports, heavy backpacks, and hours of screen time add up. The spine that started life with a few subtle stresses accumulates more over time — often without obvious symptoms, until one day it becomes a problem.

Vitalistic chiropractic care supports children not just when things go wrong, but as a proactive investment in a healthy, well-functioning nervous system from the very beginning.

How Is Pediatric Chiropractic Different from Adult Chiropractic?

Let’s get specific, because this is where a lot of the hesitation lives.

The Pressure Is Completely Different

When we adjust an adult, we use specific controlled force to move a joint. When we adjust an infant, the pressure used is roughly equivalent to the amount you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato — gentle, precise, and light. There is no twisting, no cracking, no popping in pediatric adjustments. Many babies sleep right through it.

As children grow, the pressure adjusts incrementally. A toddler receives more pressure than a newborn, but far less than an adult. By the time a child is a teenager, the approach begins to look more like adult care — but even then, it is tailored to a body that is still developing.

The Techniques Are Specialized

Pediatric chiropractors use specific techniques designed for developing spines and nervous systems. At The Wellness Tribe, we use gentle, low-force methods that are safe and appropriate for every stage of childhood development — from newborns through adolescents.

We also assess and address the whole child. We’re looking at how their nervous system is functioning, how their spine is developing, and how any areas of tension or restriction might be affecting their overall health and development — not just whether their back hurts.

The Goals Are Different

For many adults, the initial goal of chiropractic care is relief — they come in because something hurts and they want it to stop hurting. For children, the goal from the start is wellness and optimization. We’re not chasing symptoms. We’re supporting a nervous system that is still building itself, still learning, still laying down the patterns it will carry for decades.

A child whose nervous system is functioning well is a child who sleeps better, fights off illness more effectively, regulates their emotions more easily, and develops along a healthy trajectory. That’s what we’re working toward.

What Does a Pediatric Chiropractic Visit Look Like at The Wellness Tribe?

We know that bringing a child to any new healthcare provider can feel like a leap of faith. Here’s what you can actually expect.

Your first visit starts with a conversation — about your child’s birth history, developmental milestones, health concerns, sleep patterns, and anything else you’ve noticed. We want the full picture. We’re not in a rush.

The assessment itself is gentle and non-invasive. For infants, we may simply observe how they hold their head, how they turn each direction, and gently palpate their spine. For older children, we do a more thorough structural and neurological assessment.

The adjustment, when we do one, is quick and gentle. Most kids — even tiny babies — tolerate it beautifully. Many actually enjoy it. We’ve had more than a few toddlers who consider their adjustment a highlight of the week.

We always explain what we’re doing and why. We answer every question. And we make sure both parent and child feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.

What Conditions Bring Families to Us?

Parents bring their children to The Wellness Tribe for a wide range of reasons. Some of the most common include:

Infants: Difficulty latching or nursing, colic, reflux, torticollis (tilting or preference for one side), disrupted sleep, excessive fussiness

Toddlers and young children: Ear infections, sleep disturbances, growing pains, developmental support, general wellness

School-age children: Postural issues, sports injuries, headaches, difficulty focusing, immune support, backpack-related strain

Teenagers: Tech neck and posture from screen use, sports recovery, stress and anxiety support, scoliosis monitoring

In every case, we’re not treating the condition directly — we’re supporting the nervous system that is responsible for the body’s ability to heal, regulate, and function optimally. When the nervous system is clear and communicating well, the body often resolves many of these issues on its own.

Is Pediatric Chiropractic Safe?

Yes. When performed by a trained chiropractor using age-appropriate techniques, pediatric chiropractic has an excellent safety record. Research and clinical experience consistently support its use for infants and children as a gentle, non-invasive option for supporting health and development.

At The Wellness Tribe, we have extensive training in pediatric care and take every precaution to ensure that each child receives care that is exactly right for their size, age, and developmental stage.

Raising Healthy Kids from the Inside Out

Here’s what we believe at the heart of all of this: children deserve to be supported, not just treated. They deserve care that sees them as whole, intelligent beings whose bodies are already striving toward health and vitality.

Chiropractic is not about fixing broken children. It’s about removing the interference that keeps their incredible little bodies from doing what they were designed to do.
