By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

If you’ve ever been to a chiropractor, you’ve probably heard the word “subluxation.” It’s one of those terms that gets used a lot in chiropractic offices but rarely gets explained in a way that actually makes sense to people outside the field.

So let’s fix that.

Understanding subluxations — what they are, how they happen, what they do to your body, and how they get corrected — is genuinely useful information for anyone who cares about their long-term health. And once you understand them, a lot of things about how your body works (and sometimes doesn’t work the way you’d like) start to click into place.

What Is a Subluxation?

A subluxation — technically called a “vertebral subluxation” — is a misalignment in the spine that creates interference in the nervous system.

Let’s break that down.

Your spine is made up of 24 movable vertebrae stacked on top of each other, plus your sacrum and tailbone. Between each pair of vertebrae, nerves branch out from the spinal cord and travel to every part of your body — your organs, your muscles, your skin, your immune system. Everything.

When your spine is aligned and moving properly, those nerves have a clear, open pathway. Signals travel freely between your brain and your body. Your innate intelligence — the body’s built-in wisdom — can communicate, regulate, and heal without interference.

A subluxation occurs when one or more vertebrae shift out of their optimal position. That shift creates a kind of static in the system — pressure, irritation, or tension around the surrounding nerves that disrupts the quality of the signals traveling through them.

Here’s the important distinction: a subluxation is not primarily a structural problem. It’s a neurological problem. The misalignment matters because of what it does to the nervous system — not just because a bone is in the wrong place.

Do Subluxations Always Hurt?

This is one of the most important things to understand — and one of the most common misconceptions about spinal health.

Most subluxations are not painful. In fact, research suggests that only about 10% of your nervous system is dedicated to perceiving pain. The other 90% governs all the other functions of your body — organ function, immune response, hormonal regulation, and more.

This means you can have significant subluxations — and significant neurological interference — without feeling any pain at all. Your digestion might be sluggish. Your immune system might be underperforming. Your sleep might be poor. Your energy might be low. Your mood might be flat. But because nothing “hurts,” you might never connect these things to spinal health.

This is why we don’t wait for pain to get a chiropractic adjustment, just as we don’t wait for a toothache to go to the dentist. By the time something hurts, the interference has usually been building for a while.

How Do Subluxations Happen?

The honest answer is: life.

Subluxations are the accumulated result of the physical, chemical, and emotional stresses that our bodies absorb over a lifetime. Some of the most common causes include:

Birth trauma: The birth process places significant mechanical stress on an infant’s cervical spine and cranium. Even uncomplicated births involve strong compression and rotation forces. This is why many chiropractors recommend having newborns checked shortly after birth.

Falls and injuries: Childhood tumbles, sports impacts, car accidents, and other physical traumas can all cause or contribute to subluxations — sometimes immediately, sometimes as compensation patterns that develop over time.

Posture and repetitive stress: Hours spent at a desk, looking at screens, sitting in a car, or doing repetitive physical work gradually load the spine in ways that create misalignment. This is one of the most pervasive sources of subluxation in modern life.

Emotional and psychological stress: This one surprises people. But the nervous system doesn’t distinguish between physical and emotional threats — both activate the same stress response, the same muscular tension, the same postural patterns. Chronic anxiety, unresolved grief, and ongoing relational stress all leave physical signatures in the spine and surrounding tissue.

Chemical stressors: Inflammation from poor diet, environmental toxins, and certain medications can affect the tissues surrounding the spine, contributing to the conditions that allow subluxations to develop and persist.

What Do Subluxations Do to the Body?

Remember: the nerves exiting the spine go everywhere. So the effects of subluxation aren’t limited to back pain — they depend entirely on which nerves are being affected.

Subluxations in the upper cervical spine (the neck) may affect the brainstem, which regulates blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and the autonomic nervous system. This is why cervical subluxations are associated with headaches, migraines, dizziness, tinnitus, anxiety, and even blood pressure changes.

Subluxations in the thoracic spine (mid-back) may affect the nerves that govern the heart, lungs, and digestive system. Mid-back subluxations are sometimes associated with acid reflux, asthma, mid-back pain, and general fatigue.

Subluxations in the lumbar spine (lower back) may affect the nerves supplying the lower digestive tract, reproductive organs, bladder, and legs. These are associated with low back pain, sciatica, hip issues, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Again — pain is only one possible expression. The body adapts remarkably well for a long time before it signals distress through pain. That adaptation, however, comes at a cost.

How Are Subluxations Corrected?

Through chiropractic adjustments.

An adjustment is a specific, controlled input — delivered by hand or instrument — to a subluxated vertebra. The goal is to restore proper movement and alignment, relieving pressure on the surrounding nerves and restoring clear communication in the nervous system.

At The Wellness Tribe, we use gentle, specific techniques tailored to each patient’s age, size, and health history. We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. A newborn’s adjustment looks nothing like an adult’s. A pregnant woman’s adjustment looks different from a healthy 30-year-old’s. We meet your body exactly where it is.

Most patients describe the immediate aftermath of an adjustment as a feeling of release — lighter, less tense, more at ease. Over time, with consistent care, many people notice improvements in sleep, energy, immunity, digestion, emotional regulation, and overall sense of wellbeing — often in addition to whatever pain or symptom brought them in initially.

How Often Do You Need to Be Adjusted?

This depends on you — your history, your lifestyle, your current level of subluxation, and your health goals.

For someone new to chiropractic care who has accumulated years of uncorrected subluxations, more frequent visits initially are typically recommended to begin restoring proper function. As the spine stabilizes and the nervous system recalibrates, visits often become less frequent.

Many of our patients eventually settle into a maintenance schedule — coming in every few weeks or once a month — simply because they’ve experienced what it feels like to function at their best, and they want to maintain it. Like regular dental cleanings or gym visits, it’s not about crisis management. It’s about ongoing investment in your health.

You Don’t Have to Wait Until Something Breaks

Here’s the reframe we’d love you to take away from this post: subluxations are not a sign that something has gone catastrophically wrong with your body. They are a normal consequence of being a physical being living in a demanding world. They happen to everyone.

The question is simply whether you’re addressing them — giving your spine and nervous system the regular care and attention they need to function at their best — or waiting until the interference becomes loud enough to demand your attention through pain or illness.

Your body is always working toward health. Always. Our job is simply to remove the obstacles in its way.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

Most of us were taught that the heart is the most important organ. Or maybe the brain. And while those are certainly vital, there’s a system that quietly governs everything — every heartbeat, every breath, every immune response, every thought, every emotion, every moment of healing — and most people have never given it much thought.

That system is your nervous system. And understanding it just a little bit changes everything about how you think about health.

At The Wellness Tribe, the nervous system isn’t just something we reference in passing — it’s the foundation of everything we do. So let’s talk about it: what it is, what it controls, what happens when it’s dysregulated, and what you can actually do to support it.

What Does the Nervous System Actually Do?

The short answer is: everything.

Your nervous system is the master communication network of your body. It includes your brain, spinal cord, and the vast web of nerves that extends to every single organ, tissue, and cell in your body. Every signal that travels in your body — from your brain to your heart, from your gut to your brain, from your skin to your immune system — travels through the nervous system.

Here’s a partial list of what your nervous system controls:

Heart rate and blood pressure

Breathing

Digestion and gut motility

Immune function and inflammation response

Hormone production and regulation

Sleep and wake cycles

Emotional regulation and stress response

Sensory processing

Movement and coordination

Healing and tissue repair

When the nervous system is functioning well — when signals are traveling clearly and efficiently — your body has an extraordinary capacity for self-regulation and self-healing. This is what chiropractors call innate intelligence: the body’s built-in wisdom to maintain balance, adapt to stress, and heal itself.

When the nervous system is compromised — when there’s interference, dysregulation, or chronic stress — all of those systems begin to suffer, often in ways that are hard to trace back to their source.

The Two Branches: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic

To understand nervous system health, it helps to understand its two primary operating modes.

The sympathetic nervous system is your body’s accelerator. It’s the system that activates when you’re under stress — physical, emotional, or perceived. It’s the “fight-or-flight” response: heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, digestion slows, immune function is suppressed, muscles tense, and your attention narrows. This system is brilliant and life-saving in genuine emergencies.

The parasympathetic nervous system is your body’s brake pedal. It’s the “rest-and-digest” or “tend-and-befriend” mode: heart rate slows, digestion activates, immune function strengthens, muscles relax, and your body enters a state of repair and restoration. This is the state where healing happens.

The problem for most modern humans — especially in a high-achieving, high-stimulation city like Denver — is that we spend far too much time in sympathetic dominance. Chronic stress, poor sleep, processed food, too much screen time, emotional overwhelm, and yes, spinal subluxations all push the nervous system into a state of chronic activation.

Over time, this chronic sympathetic dominance is associated with anxiety, depression, poor immune function, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, sleep disorders, chronic pain, and a whole host of conditions that we tend to treat as separate problems — when they often share a common root.

What Dysregulates the Nervous System?

Understanding this is key to understanding why so many people feel chronically unwell even when nothing is “wrong” by conventional medical standards.

Physical stressors: Spinal misalignments (subluxations), poor posture, sedentary behavior, physical injuries, chronic muscle tension, and lack of movement all create physical interference in the nervous system. The spine literally houses and protects the spinal cord — when it’s misaligned, it affects neurological function directly.

Chemical stressors: Processed foods, alcohol, environmental toxins, medications, and nutritional deficiencies all affect the chemistry that the nervous system depends on to function.

Emotional and psychological stressors: Chronic anxiety, unresolved trauma, relational stress, and the constant low-level hum of modern life keep the sympathetic nervous system activated in ways that have very real physiological consequences.

These three categories — physical, chemical, and emotional — are what chiropractors often call the “three T’s”: Traumas, Toxins, and Thoughts. And they compound each other. A body that is physically tense from subluxations is more vulnerable to emotional stress. A nervous system that is chronically activated by anxiety is less resilient to physical stressors.

What Is a Subluxation — and Why Does It Affect the Nervous System?

A subluxation is a misalignment in the spine that creates interference in the nervous system. It’s not necessarily dramatic — you don’t have to have been in a car accident or fall off a ladder to develop subluxations. They can result from the accumulated stress of everyday life: poor posture, repetitive movements, emotional tension, birth trauma, or simply sitting too much.

What makes subluxations significant isn’t just the physical misalignment. It’s the neurological interference they create. When a vertebra is out of its optimal position, it can put pressure on or irritate the surrounding nerves — disrupting the flow of information between the brain and the body.

Think of it like a dimmer switch on a light. The electricity is still flowing, but not at full capacity. Over time, the organs, tissues, and systems governed by those nerves begin to function at less than their full potential — often without any obvious pain or symptoms, until the interference becomes significant enough to cause a noticeable problem.

Chiropractic adjustments restore proper alignment and remove that interference — turning the light back up.

How to Regulate Your Nervous System: Practical Tools

Chiropractic care is one of the most powerful tools for supporting nervous system health — but it works best as part of a broader lifestyle that supports regulation. Here are some of the most effective practices:

Chiropractic adjustments: Regular adjustments remove subluxation-based interference and help shift the nervous system toward parasympathetic (rest-and-heal) dominance. Many patients notice an immediate sense of calm and ease following an adjustment — this is the nervous system settling.

Breathwork: Deep, slow diaphragmatic breathing is one of the fastest ways to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Even five minutes of intentional breathing — in for 4 counts, out for 6 — can measurably shift your nervous system state.

Cold exposure: Brief cold showers or cold water immersion activate the vagus nerve — the primary nerve of the parasympathetic system — and have been shown to improve nervous system resilience and emotional regulation over time.

Movement: Regular, varied movement — especially activities that involve rhythm, coordination, and full-body engagement like yoga, dance, or hiking — provides rich proprioceptive input that nourishes the nervous system.

Sleep: The nervous system does its deepest repair work during sleep. Prioritizing 7–9 hours of quality sleep is non-negotiable for nervous system health.

Nature exposure: Time spent in natural environments measurably reduces cortisol levels and supports parasympathetic tone. Even a walk through Wash Park counts.

Reducing screen time and digital stimulation: Constant screen exposure keeps the brain in a state of low-grade alertness that prevents full parasympathetic rest. Creating screen-free wind-down time before bed is one of the simplest interventions you can make.

Mindfulness and meditation: Regular meditation practice literally changes the structure and function of the brain over time, improving emotional regulation, reducing stress reactivity, and strengthening parasympathetic tone.

The Chiropractic Piece

At The Wellness Tribe, every adjustment we make is made with the nervous system in mind. We are not simply moving bones. We are restoring communication — clearing the channel between the brain and the body so that your innate intelligence can express itself fully.

We’ve seen patients whose chronic anxiety shifted after consistent care. Patients whose digestion improved. Patients whose sleep transformed. Patients who simply feel more like themselves — more regulated, more resilient, more present — after making chiropractic a regular part of their wellness practice.

This is not magic. It’s physiology. And it’s available to you.

Your nervous system is working for you, every single moment of every single day. The least we can do is support it.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

It’s one of the most common things we hear from parents when they first bring their child in: “Wait — you’re not going to crack them like you do adults, right?”

We always smile at this. And the answer is: absolutely not.

Pediatric chiropractic is its own specialized discipline. The techniques, the pressure, the goals, and even the philosophy behind adjusting a child are fundamentally different from working with an adult body. If you’ve been curious about chiropractic care for your child but hesitant because you weren’t sure what it actually involves, this post is for you.

Why Do Kids Even Need Chiropractic Care?

Before we get into the how, let’s talk about the why — because this surprises a lot of parents.

We tend to think of chiropractic as something you seek out when something hurts. But from a vitalistic perspective, chiropractic care isn’t primarily about pain. It’s about the health of the nervous system — and the nervous system begins developing long before a child ever reports a backache.

The birth process itself, however beautiful, is one of the most physically intense experiences a human body ever undergoes — for both mother and baby. Even in an uncomplicated vaginal birth, significant forces are placed on the infant’s cervical spine and cranium. In assisted deliveries involving forceps or vacuum extraction, or in cesarean births, those stresses can be even greater.

These early stresses can result in subtle misalignments — subluxations — in the infant’s spine that create interference in the nervous system. A baby can’t tell you their neck feels stiff or that something is off. But they may express it through difficulty latching, colic, reflux, disrupted sleep, or general fussiness that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause.

As children grow, falls, tumbles, sports, heavy backpacks, and hours of screen time add up. The spine that started life with a few subtle stresses accumulates more over time — often without obvious symptoms, until one day it becomes a problem.

Vitalistic chiropractic care supports children not just when things go wrong, but as a proactive investment in a healthy, well-functioning nervous system from the very beginning.

How Is Pediatric Chiropractic Different from Adult Chiropractic?

Let’s get specific, because this is where a lot of the hesitation lives.

The Pressure Is Completely Different

When we adjust an adult, we use specific controlled force to move a joint. When we adjust an infant, the pressure used is roughly equivalent to the amount you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato — gentle, precise, and light. There is no twisting, no cracking, no popping in pediatric adjustments. Many babies sleep right through it.

As children grow, the pressure adjusts incrementally. A toddler receives more pressure than a newborn, but far less than an adult. By the time a child is a teenager, the approach begins to look more like adult care — but even then, it is tailored to a body that is still developing.

The Techniques Are Specialized

Pediatric chiropractors use specific techniques designed for developing spines and nervous systems. At The Wellness Tribe, we use gentle, low-force methods that are safe and appropriate for every stage of childhood development — from newborns through adolescents.

We also assess and address the whole child. We’re looking at how their nervous system is functioning, how their spine is developing, and how any areas of tension or restriction might be affecting their overall health and development — not just whether their back hurts.

The Goals Are Different

For many adults, the initial goal of chiropractic care is relief — they come in because something hurts and they want it to stop hurting. For children, the goal from the start is wellness and optimization. We’re not chasing symptoms. We’re supporting a nervous system that is still building itself, still learning, still laying down the patterns it will carry for decades.

A child whose nervous system is functioning well is a child who sleeps better, fights off illness more effectively, regulates their emotions more easily, and develops along a healthy trajectory. That’s what we’re working toward.

What Does a Pediatric Chiropractic Visit Look Like at The Wellness Tribe?

We know that bringing a child to any new healthcare provider can feel like a leap of faith. Here’s what you can actually expect.

Your first visit starts with a conversation — about your child’s birth history, developmental milestones, health concerns, sleep patterns, and anything else you’ve noticed. We want the full picture. We’re not in a rush.

The assessment itself is gentle and non-invasive. For infants, we may simply observe how they hold their head, how they turn each direction, and gently palpate their spine. For older children, we do a more thorough structural and neurological assessment.

The adjustment, when we do one, is quick and gentle. Most kids — even tiny babies — tolerate it beautifully. Many actually enjoy it. We’ve had more than a few toddlers who consider their adjustment a highlight of the week.

We always explain what we’re doing and why. We answer every question. And we make sure both parent and child feel comfortable and informed every step of the way.

What Conditions Bring Families to Us?

Parents bring their children to The Wellness Tribe for a wide range of reasons. Some of the most common include:

Infants: Difficulty latching or nursing, colic, reflux, torticollis (tilting or preference for one side), disrupted sleep, excessive fussiness

Toddlers and young children: Ear infections, sleep disturbances, growing pains, developmental support, general wellness

School-age children: Postural issues, sports injuries, headaches, difficulty focusing, immune support, backpack-related strain

Teenagers: Tech neck and posture from screen use, sports recovery, stress and anxiety support, scoliosis monitoring

In every case, we’re not treating the condition directly — we’re supporting the nervous system that is responsible for the body’s ability to heal, regulate, and function optimally. When the nervous system is clear and communicating well, the body often resolves many of these issues on its own.

Is Pediatric Chiropractic Safe?

Yes. When performed by a trained chiropractor using age-appropriate techniques, pediatric chiropractic has an excellent safety record. Research and clinical experience consistently support its use for infants and children as a gentle, non-invasive option for supporting health and development.

At The Wellness Tribe, we have extensive training in pediatric care and take every precaution to ensure that each child receives care that is exactly right for their size, age, and developmental stage.

Raising Healthy Kids from the Inside Out

Here’s what we believe at the heart of all of this: children deserve to be supported, not just treated. They deserve care that sees them as whole, intelligent beings whose bodies are already striving toward health and vitality.

Chiropractic is not about fixing broken children. It’s about removing the interference that keeps their incredible little bodies from doing what they were designed to do.

If you’re a Denver parent curious about pediatric chiropractic — whether for a brand-new baby or a school-age kid — we’d love to talk. Come meet us, ask all your questions, and see if we might be a fit for your family.

The tribe is always open.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD — or if you’re in that exhausting in-between space of wondering whether something is going on neurologically — you’ve probably done a lot of research. You’ve read about medication options, behavioral therapies, dietary changes, and more. You may have come across chiropractic care and wondered: is there anything to this, or is it wishful thinking?

It’s a fair and important question, and we want to answer it honestly.

The short answer is: chiropractic care is not a cure for ADHD, and we will never claim otherwise. But for many families, it has become a meaningful piece of a larger wellness puzzle — and the reasons why are actually grounded in neuroscience.

Let’s dig in.

What Is ADHD, Really? A Nervous System Perspective

ADHD — Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder — is primarily understood as a neurodevelopmental condition. It involves differences in how the brain develops and regulates attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It is real, it is complex, and it affects millions of children (and adults) in ways that can significantly impact daily life.

From a conventional standpoint, ADHD is often treated with stimulant medications, behavioral interventions, and educational accommodations. These approaches work well for many children and families, and we deeply respect them.

From a vitalistic chiropractic perspective, we look at ADHD through the lens of the nervous system — specifically, how the brain and body are communicating with each other, and whether there is anything creating interference in that communication.

The nervous system regulates everything: attention, sensory processing, emotional regulation, motor control, sleep, and the body’s ability to move between states of calm focus and active engagement. When the nervous system is dysregulated — when it’s stuck in a state of chronic stress or hyperarousal — the challenges associated with ADHD can be amplified significantly.

The Brain-Body Connection in ADHD

Here’s where it gets interesting from a chiropractic standpoint.

Research has increasingly highlighted the role of the cerebellum and the brainstem in ADHD. The cerebellum — long thought of primarily as a motor coordination center — is now understood to play a significant role in cognitive function, attention, and impulse control. The brainstem, which sits at the junction of the brain and spinal cord, is the master regulator of the autonomic nervous system — the system responsible for whether your child is in a calm, focused state or a reactive, dysregulated one.

The upper cervical spine (the top of the neck) has a particularly intimate relationship with the brainstem. Misalignments in this area — subluxations — can create neurological interference that affects not just neck movement, but neurological function more broadly.

Birth trauma, early falls, sports impacts, and even the cumulative stress of sitting at a desk for hours can all contribute to tension and misalignment in the upper cervical region. Addressing that tension through gentle, specific chiropractic care may help support better neurological communication and nervous system regulation.

What Does the Research Say?

We want to be transparent here: the research on chiropractic and ADHD is promising but still emerging. There are not yet large-scale randomized controlled trials definitively proving that chiropractic care reduces ADHD symptoms. What we do have is a growing body of case studies, clinical observations, and parental reports that consistently describe improvements in focus, behavior, sleep, and overall regulation in children receiving regular chiropractic care.

A 2010 case study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine documented significant improvement in ADHD symptoms in a child receiving chiropractic care over a period of months. Multiple similar case reports have been published in peer-reviewed journals noting improvements in attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

Additionally, research on the relationship between spinal health, the autonomic nervous system, and cognitive function continues to build a compelling theoretical framework for why chiropractic care might support children with ADHD — even if large clinical trials haven’t yet caught up.

We believe the evidence is promising enough to take seriously — especially when the intervention itself is gentle, non-invasive, and supports overall health in ways that extend far beyond ADHD.

How Chiropractic Might Help: The Practical Mechanisms

Here are the specific ways chiropractic care may support a child with ADHD:

Nervous system regulation: Gentle spinal adjustments — particularly in the upper cervical region — may help shift the nervous system from a chronic state of sympathetic dominance (fight-or-flight) toward a more balanced, regulated state. Many parents of children with ADHD notice that their child seems calmer, more settled, and more able to transition between activities after regular care.

Improved sleep quality: Many children with ADHD struggle with sleep, and poor sleep dramatically amplifies ADHD symptoms. Chiropractic care — by supporting nervous system regulation — often improves sleep quality and duration in pediatric patients.

Reduced sensory sensitivity: Some children with ADHD also experience heightened sensory sensitivity. By supporting more balanced neurological processing, chiropractic care may help the nervous system filter and integrate sensory input more effectively.

Better body awareness: Proprioception — the body’s sense of its own position in space — is processed through the spine and nervous system. Improved proprioceptive input from chiropractic adjustments may support better focus and body regulation.

What to Expect If You Bring Your Child In

At The Wellness Tribe, we take a thorough, individualized approach to every child we see. When parents bring a child with ADHD — or with suspected attention and regulation challenges — here’s what that looks like.

We start with a detailed history: birth story, developmental milestones, sleep patterns, sensory responses, school performance, emotional regulation, and any previous assessments or diagnoses. We want to understand your child fully, not just their spine.

Our assessment is gentle and non-invasive. We’re looking at how the nervous system is communicating — not just structurally, but functionally. We may look at how your child holds tension in their body, how they respond to sensory input, and where there might be areas of restriction affecting neurological flow.

The adjustments themselves are gentle and appropriate for your child’s age and size. We go at your child’s pace, and we always make the experience as comfortable and even enjoyable as possible.

Chiropractic as Part of a Bigger Picture

We want to be clear: we are not suggesting that chiropractic care replace other interventions for ADHD. Medication, behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, and educational support all have important roles — and we believe in working collaboratively with your child’s full care team.

What we offer is a complementary lens. A way of supporting the nervous system that doesn’t conflict with other approaches and may enhance the effectiveness of everything else you’re doing. Many of the families we work with combine chiropractic care with dietary changes, mindfulness practices, and therapeutic support — and report that the combination creates something greater than the sum of its parts.

Your child is more than their diagnosis. They are a whole, intelligent being with a nervous system that is doing its very best. Our job is to support that system — to remove interference and give their brilliant brain the clearest possible channel to communicate through.

If you’re a Denver parent exploring natural support options for your child, we would be honored to be part of your team.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

Not all chiropractors practice the same way. If you’ve seen one chiropractor and wondered why a visit to another felt completely different — or if you’re trying to figure out which type of chiropractor is right for you — this post is going to clear things up considerably.

The divide between vitalistic and mechanistic chiropractic isn’t just a philosophical footnote. It shapes everything: how your chiropractor thinks about your health, what they’re looking for in your body, what they’re trying to achieve with an adjustment, and what kind of relationship you’ll have with them over time.

Understanding the difference helps you make a genuinely informed choice.

Two Different Questions

At the heart of the distinction between vitalistic and mechanistic chiropractic are two different questions.

The mechanistic chiropractor asks: What is the structural problem, and how do I fix it?

The vitalistic chiropractor asks: What is interfering with this person’s innate capacity for health, and how do I remove it?

Same hands. Same table. Completely different frame.

What Is Mechanistic Chiropractic?

Mechanistic chiropractic views the body primarily as a sophisticated machine. When something goes wrong, there’s a structural or biomechanical cause — a misaligned joint, a compressed disc, a tight muscle — and the chiropractor’s job is to identify and correct that structural problem.

This approach is largely symptom-driven. Patients come in with back pain, neck pain, sciatica, or headaches, and the chiropractor works to resolve those symptoms by correcting the relevant structural issue. When the pain is gone, the treatment is typically done.

Mechanistic chiropractic is effective and valuable. It helps millions of people with musculoskeletal pain every year, and it’s the model that most people think of when they imagine a chiropractic visit.

But it has limits — primarily because it treats the body as a collection of parts rather than an integrated whole, and because it focuses on symptoms rather than the underlying conditions that allowed those symptoms to develop.

What Is Vitalistic Chiropractic?

Vitalistic chiropractic is rooted in the original philosophy of the chiropractic profession — the idea that the body has an innate intelligence that is always striving toward health and wholeness. This intelligence is expressed through the nervous system, which coordinates every function of the body and carries the information necessary for self-regulation, adaptation, and healing.

From a vitalistic perspective, the primary cause of dis-ease (a departure from ease and optimal function) is interference in the nervous system — most often caused by vertebral subluxations, but also by chemical and emotional stressors. The chiropractor’s primary job is to identify and remove that interference, allowing the body’s innate intelligence to express itself fully.

What this means in practice:

Vitalistic care is proactive, not reactive. We don’t wait for pain or symptoms to seek care — just as you don’t wait for a cavity to form before brushing your teeth. Regular chiropractic care is an ongoing investment in nervous system health, not a crisis response.

Vitalistic care addresses the whole person. We’re not just asking where it hurts. We’re asking about your sleep, your stress levels, your digestion, your energy, your emotional state — because all of these are expressions of nervous system function, and all of them are relevant to your health.

Vitalistic care sees symptoms as signals, not the problem. If your body is producing a symptom — whether that’s pain, fatigue, anxiety, or illness — that symptom is the body’s intelligent communication that something needs attention. Suppressing the symptom without addressing its root is, from a vitalistic perspective, working against the body’s wisdom rather than with it.

Vitalistic care supports long-term wellness. The goal isn’t to get you out of pain and out the door. The goal is to support a nervous system that functions at its full potential — so that you can live with more energy, resilience, clarity, and vitality, consistently, over the long arc of your life.

How Does This Show Up in an Actual Visit?

If you’ve been to a mechanistic chiropractor and you come to The Wellness Tribe, you’ll probably notice some differences.

Your first visit will involve a comprehensive consultation — not just about your symptoms, but about your health history, your lifestyle, your stress levels, your goals. We want to understand you as a whole person.

When we do your assessment, we’re looking at neurological function alongside structural alignment. We’re asking: where is the interference? What is it affecting? What is this person’s nervous system doing, and what does it need?

Our adjustments are specific and intentional — not a general “crack everything and see what helps,” but a targeted correction of the subluxations that are creating the most significant interference for your unique nervous system.

And we’ll talk to you about what we find. We’ll explain what we’re seeing and why it matters. Because we believe an educated patient is an empowered patient — and because understanding your own nervous system health is one of the most valuable things you can take home from any visit.

Which Approach Is Right for You?

Honestly? That depends on what you’re looking for.

If you have acute pain and want relief, both approaches can help. Many patients come to vitalistic practitioners initially for pain relief and stay because they experience a quality of health they didn’t know was possible.

If you’re interested in proactive, whole-body wellness — if you want to understand the root causes of how you feel rather than just manage symptoms — vitalistic chiropractic is a fundamentally different and more comprehensive experience.

If you’re pregnant, have a baby or young child, or are dealing with challenges that don’t fit neatly into a structural diagnosis — anxiety, fatigue, immune issues, digestive trouble, sleep problems — vitalistic chiropractic’s nervous-system-first approach is particularly well suited.

And if you’ve seen chiropractors before and haven’t felt like they truly got you — haven’t addressed the whole picture, haven’t asked the deeper questions — we’d gently invite you to try something different.

Our Philosophy at The Wellness Tribe

We practice from a deeply vitalistic foundation. We believe your body is not broken. We believe it is intelligent, adaptive, and always working toward its own highest expression of health.

Our job is not to fix you. It’s to remove what’s in the way — the subluxations, the interference, the accumulated stress that keeps your nervous system from functioning at its full, radiant capacity.

We also believe that health is not just the absence of disease. It’s a positive state of vitality, clarity, and wholeness that is your birthright. And it’s something we are honored to support, one adjustment at a time.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

The third trimester. You’re in the home stretch, and your body knows it. Sleep is harder to come by. Your back aches in ways you didn’t know were possible. Baby is running out of room, and you’re somehow expected to keep going about your life like nothing is happening. We see you, mama — and we want you to know that you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through these final weeks.

Prenatal chiropractic care, especially in the third trimester, is one of the most powerful and underutilized tools in a pregnant person’s wellness toolkit. It’s gentle, it’s safe, and for so many of our patients here in Denver, it has been genuinely life-changing in those final weeks before birth.

Whether you’ve never seen a chiropractor before or you’re already part of the tribe, here’s what you need to know about why the third trimester is actually one of the best times to prioritize spinal and pelvic care.

Is Chiropractic Safe in the Third Trimester?

This is the first question almost every new patient asks — and it’s a great one. The short answer is yes, absolutely. Chiropractic care is safe throughout pregnancy, including the third trimester, and is specifically designed to support a body that is growing, shifting, and preparing for birth.

At The Wellness Tribe, we use gentle, low-force adjustments that are modified specifically for pregnancy. Our table accommodates your belly comfortably, and we are trained in techniques that prioritize both your safety and baby’s. Many of our pregnant patients start care in the third trimester and wish they had come sooner.

The American Pregnancy Association recognizes chiropractic care as a safe and effective option during pregnancy, and growing research continues to support its use for pain relief, pelvic balance, and overall wellness during this critical time.

Benefit #1: Relief from Pregnancy Back Pain and Sciatica

Let’s start with the big one, because it’s the reason most pregnant people walk through our door. Back pain during pregnancy — especially in the third trimester — is incredibly common, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it.

As your belly grows, your center of gravity shifts forward. Your lower back compensates by increasing its curve, which puts significant stress on your lumbar spine and the surrounding muscles. Add in the hormone relaxin (which loosens your ligaments in preparation for birth) and you’ve got a recipe for instability, discomfort, and sometimes sharp sciatic nerve pain that radiates from your lower back down through your legs.

Chiropractic adjustments help by restoring proper alignment to the lumbar spine and pelvis, relieving pressure on the nerves and joints that are bearing the brunt of all this change. Many patients notice significant relief after just one or two visits — and that relief can make an enormous difference in your quality of life during those final weeks.

Benefit #2: Optimal Fetal Positioning with the Webster Technique

This is one of the most important and unique benefits of prenatal chiropractic, and it’s something that sets our approach apart.

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed to reduce tension in the pelvis, sacrum, and surrounding ligaments — creating the most balanced, open environment possible for baby to settle into an optimal position for birth. A well-aligned pelvis gives baby the space they need to move into a head-down position naturally.

While the Webster Technique is not a baby-turning procedure (that’s a different intervention called ECV), many care providers and midwives refer patients to us specifically because a balanced pelvis can reduce the likelihood of breech or transverse positioning. When baby is in a good position, labor tends to be more efficient and interventions are less likely.

If you’re in your third trimester and baby isn’t head-down yet — or you simply want to give them every opportunity to find the best position — Webster Technique care is absolutely worth exploring.

Benefit #3: Shorter, More Efficient Labor and Delivery

This might be the benefit that surprises people the most, but the research is compelling. Studies suggest that women who receive regular chiropractic care during pregnancy experience shorter labor times compared to those who don’t.

Why? It comes back to pelvic balance. When your pelvis is properly aligned and the surrounding soft tissue is free of tension, your body can move through the stages of labor more efficiently. Muscles and ligaments that have been chronically tight or restricted can release more readily. Baby has more room to navigate the birth canal. And your nervous system — which is coordinating every contraction, every hormone release, and every signal during labor — is functioning at its best.

We’ve had patients report back to us after birth with amazement at how smoothly things went, and many of them credit consistent chiropractic care as a key piece of their preparation. We can’t promise any particular birth experience, but we can help your body be as ready as possible.

Benefit #4: Better Sleep and Less Discomfort Day to Day

By the third trimester, comfortable sleep feels like a distant memory. Between the size of your belly, the pressure on your hips and pelvis, the frequent trips to the bathroom, and the general restlessness that comes with late pregnancy, truly restorative rest can be elusive.

Chiropractic care helps by addressing the musculoskeletal discomfort that makes finding a comfortable position so difficult. When your pelvis is balanced and your spine is properly aligned, there’s less tension pulling on surrounding muscles and connective tissue. Many patients tell us they sleep noticeably better in the days following an adjustment.

Beyond sleep, regular care can reduce the general aches and pains that make everyday life harder in the third trimester — the hip tightness when you roll over, the mid-back ache from your shifting posture, the heaviness in your pelvis at the end of a long day. These things don’t have to be just “part of pregnancy.” There’s support available.

Benefit #5: Nervous System Support for You and Baby

Here’s where we get into the heart of vitalistic chiropractic care — and why we believe it matters so much, especially during pregnancy.

Your nervous system is the master communication network of your body. It governs every function, every process, every adaptation your body makes during pregnancy. When your spine is misaligned — what chiropractors call a subluxation — it creates interference in that communication system. Your body’s innate intelligence is still working hard, but it’s working against static.

Chiropractic care removes that interference. It clears the channel so your nervous system can do what it was brilliantly designed to do — grow a human being, prepare your body for birth, and keep you as healthy and resilient as possible through all of it.

And here’s the beautiful part: your nervous system and your baby’s are intimately connected. A calm, well-functioning maternal nervous system creates a more regulated environment for baby in the womb. That’s not just poetic — it’s physiological.

What Does Prenatal Chiropractic in Denver Look Like?

If you’re new to chiropractic care — or new to prenatal care specifically — here’s what you can expect at The Wellness Tribe.

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation where we learn about your pregnancy, your history, any symptoms you’re experiencing, and your birth goals. We take the time to actually know you, not just your spine. From there, we’ll do a gentle assessment and your first adjustment, tailored entirely to where you are in your pregnancy.

Follow-up visits are typically 20–30 minutes. Many of our pregnant patients come weekly in the third trimester, though we’ll always work with your schedule and your body’s needs. Everything we do is gentle, intentional, and designed with both you and baby in mind.

We speak Spanish, we welcome all families, and we’ve built a practice around being a judgment-free space where you feel at home. Because that’s what a tribe is.

You Were Made for This — Let’s Support You Through It

The third trimester is extraordinary. It’s also hard. And you deserve more than just being told to “push through it” or that discomfort is just part of the deal. Your body is doing something incredible, and it deserves to be supported with the same intention and care.

If you’re in Denver and looking for a prenatal chiropractor who truly understands the vitalistic approach to pregnancy wellness, we would love to meet you and your growing family.

Come find your tribe.

You did it. You grew a whole human being, brought them into the world, and now you’re in the thick of the most beautiful, exhausting, transformative chapter of your life. Whether your birth was exactly as planned or took a completely different turn, one thing is certain — your body has been through something extraordinary. And it deserves extraordinary support on the other side.

At The Wellness Tribe, we work with mamas throughout pregnancy and beyond, and we want to talk about something that doesn’t always make the postpartum conversation: chiropractic care. Because while everyone is (rightfully) focused on the baby, your body is still in the middle of a massive recovery — and chiropractic can be one of the most powerful tools in your healing toolkit.

Why Does My Body Still Hurt After Having a Baby?

Let’s take a moment to honor what just happened. Over the course of pregnancy, your body shifted your center of gravity, loosened your ligaments (thanks, relaxin!), expanded your ribcage, and asked your pelvis to do things it has never done before. Your spine adapted to carrying extra weight, your posture changed, and your nervous system worked overtime to support two people.

Then came labor — whether that was hours of contractions, pushing, an epidural, a C-section, or all of the above. Your pelvis, sacrum, and spine went through significant physical stress during delivery. Even the most straightforward birth creates shifts in your musculoskeletal system that need time and support to realign.

And now? You’re holding, feeding, bending, rocking, and nurturing — often with a body that is still in recovery mode. The repetitive postures of new motherhood (hello, nursing hunch) add a whole new layer of physical demand on an already taxed system.

This is why postpartum chiropractic care matters so much.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe After Giving Birth?

Chiropractic care in the postpartum period is about more than back pain — though it absolutely helps with that too. It’s about helping your nervous system, spine, and pelvis return to a state of balance so your body can heal itself the way it’s designed to.

Here’s what we commonly see and support in our postpartum mamas:

Pelvic Realignment Your pelvis went through an enormous amount of stress during pregnancy and delivery. It’s common for the sacrum, tailbone, or pelvic bones to remain misaligned after birth — sometimes for months if left unaddressed. This can contribute to low back pain, hip pain, discomfort while sitting, and difficulty with core reconnection. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help guide the pelvis back into proper alignment, which is foundational to everything else.

Nervous System Support At The Wellness Tribe, everything comes back to the nervous system — because it runs everything. After birth, your nervous system may be in a heightened state of stress, which can affect sleep, mood, milk production, and your body’s ability to heal. When the spine is aligned, the nervous system can communicate freely and efficiently, creating the conditions your body needs to recover.

C-Section Recovery If you had a C-section, your body is healing from major abdominal surgery while also caring for a newborn. Chiropractic care (introduced gently and at the right time, with your provider’s clearance) can help restore spinal alignment that may have shifted during pregnancy, address tension through the mid and lower back, and support your nervous system through the recovery process.

Neck and Upper Back Relief New mom posture is real. Feeding, babywearing, and looking down at your little one puts tremendous strain on the neck and upper back. Left unaddressed, this can turn into chronic tension, headaches, or even nerve irritation. Regular adjustments keep things moving freely so you can be present — and comfortable — in this season.

Hormonal and Emotional Balance Your hormones are on a wild ride postpartum. While chiropractic doesn’t directly regulate hormones, the nervous system plays a role in hormonal communication throughout the body. Many of our postpartum mamas report improvements in mood, energy, and overall sense of wellbeing alongside their physical recovery. Mind, body, and spirit are not separate — and chiropractic honors that.

How Soon Can I See a Chiropractor After Delivery?

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the answer is: sooner than you might think.

For vaginal deliveries, many mamas can begin gentle chiropractic care within the first few weeks postpartum — some even within days, depending on how they’re feeling. For C-sections, we typically recommend waiting until your incision is healing well and you have clearance from your OB or midwife, usually around 6-8 weeks.

That said, every body and every birth is different. We always do a thorough intake and conversation before beginning any care, and we meet you exactly where you are.

What to Expect at a Postpartum Chiropractor in Denver

If you’ve never been to The Wellness Tribe before, here’s what you can expect: a calm, judgment-free space where you are seen as a whole person — not just a set of symptoms. We take the time to understand your birth experience, your recovery, and your goals. If you want to bring baby along, please do. We love meeting your littles.

Our approach to postpartum care is gentle, intentional, and always in conversation with what your body needs. We’re not here to “fix” you — we’re here to support your body’s innate ability to heal itself.

Natural Postpartum Recovery: Building Your Support Team

Chiropractic is one piece of the postpartum wellness puzzle. We always encourage new mamas to build a full support village — which might include a pelvic floor physical therapist, a lactation consultant, a therapist or counselor, a nutritionist, and of course, people who love you.

At The Wellness Tribe, we’re big believers in community as medicine. You were not meant to do this alone, and the more support you have around you — physically, emotionally, spiritually — the better you and your baby will thrive.

New Moms Deserve Care Too: Your Recovery Matters

There’s a cultural tendency to pour everything into the new baby (completely understandable) and let your own needs fall to the bottom of the list. But here’s the truth: you cannot pour from an empty cup. Investing in your recovery isn’t selfish — it’s one of the most important things you can do for your family.

Your body carried, grew, and birthed a life. It’s time to give it the care it deserves.

If you’re in the Denver area and want to learn more about postpartum chiropractic care, we’d love to connect. Reach out to us at The Wellness Tribe in Platt Park, and let’s talk about what support looks like for you in this season.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

Anxiety is one of the most common health challenges in the United States — and if you’re reading this in Denver, you’re living in one of the most high-achieving, high-stimulation cities in the country. We love this city, but we also see, every day, the toll that chronic stress and anxiety take on the people who live here.

If you’ve been managing anxiety — whether through therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or sheer willpower — and you’re wondering whether chiropractic might have something to offer, we want to give you an honest, thoughtful answer.

The short version: chiropractic care isn’t a replacement for mental health treatment. But for many people, it has become a meaningful piece of their anxiety and stress management toolkit — and the reasons why are grounded in real neuroscience.

Anxiety Lives in the Body, Not Just the Mind

Here’s something that often surprises people: anxiety is not purely a psychological phenomenon. It is deeply, fundamentally physiological.

When you’re anxious, your body is in a state of sympathetic nervous system activation — the “fight-or-flight” response. Your heart rate increases. Your muscles tense. Your digestion slows. Your breathing becomes shallow. Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system. Your brain narrows its focus toward perceived threats.

This response was brilliantly designed for genuine physical danger. The problem is that the nervous system doesn’t always distinguish well between a predator in the bushes and a difficult email from your boss, a looming deadline, or a world full of relentless stimulation. For many people, the fight-or-flight system becomes chronically activated — and the body gets stuck in a state of low-grade alarm that never fully resolves.

Over time, this chronic sympathetic dominance doesn’t just feel unpleasant. It has real physiological consequences: disrupted sleep, impaired immune function, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, muscle tension and pain, and a nervous system that becomes increasingly sensitized and reactive.

Chiropractic care — particularly the vitalistic approach — works directly with this system.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Body’s Built-In Calming System

To understand how chiropractic might help with anxiety, it helps to know about the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It runs from the brainstem down through the neck, chest, and abdomen — connecting the brain to the heart, lungs, digestive system, and more. It is the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest-and-digest” system) and plays a central role in calming the body down after stress.

When the vagus nerve is functioning well — what researchers call high “vagal tone” — the nervous system is resilient. It can respond to stress and return to calm efficiently. When vagal tone is low, the body struggles to shift out of stress states, and anxiety, depression, inflammation, and digestive issues are more likely.

The upper cervical spine has a particularly intimate relationship with the brainstem and vagus nerve. Subluxations in the upper neck can directly affect the function of the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system’s ability to regulate between sympathetic and parasympathetic states.

Gentle, specific adjustments to the upper cervical spine may support better vagal function — helping the nervous system become more resilient and better able to find its way back to calm.

What Does the Research Say?

The research on chiropractic and anxiety is growing, though it’s not yet as robust as we’d like. Here’s an honest summary of where things stand.

Multiple studies have found that chiropractic adjustments produce measurable changes in the autonomic nervous system — specifically, a shift toward parasympathetic dominance following an adjustment. Heart rate variability (HRV), which is considered one of the best markers of nervous system balance and resilience, has been shown to improve following chiropractic care in several studies.

Cortisol — the primary stress hormone — has also been shown to decrease following chiropractic adjustments in some research, suggesting a direct effect on the physiological stress response.

Patient-reported outcomes in chiropractic research consistently include improvements in anxiety, mood, sleep, and overall sense of wellbeing — not just pain relief. These reports align with what we observe clinically at The Wellness Tribe.

Does this mean chiropractic is an evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders? Not yet — the research hasn’t reached that level of certainty. What it does mean is that chiropractic care has measurable effects on the neurological systems that underlie anxiety, and that many people experience meaningful relief.

What Our Patients Tell Us

Beyond the research, there’s what we see in our practice every day.

Patients who come in for neck pain and leave saying they feel “lighter.” Patients with anxiety who notice that the week after an adjustment tends to be calmer. Parents who bring anxious children for regular care and notice improved emotional regulation and reduced reactivity. Adults who say that chiropractic has become a cornerstone of their mental health maintenance alongside therapy and meditation.

One patient told us: “I didn’t come in for anxiety. I came in for my neck. But after a few weeks of consistent care, my therapist asked me what I’d changed — because she was noticing a shift. I had to think about it. It was the chiropractic.”

We hear versions of this story regularly. We don’t take it lightly, and we don’t oversell it. But we also don’t dismiss it — because we understand the mechanism.

Chiropractic as Part of Your Anxiety Support System

We want to be clear: we are not anti-medication, anti-therapy, or anti-psychiatry. Mental health care is real, important, and sometimes life-saving. If you are working with a therapist, psychiatrist, or other mental health provider, we deeply respect that work — and chiropractic care is not a replacement for it.

What we offer is a complementary support for the physical substrate of anxiety — the nervous system, the body, the physiology. We address the part of anxiety that lives in your muscles, your posture, your spine, and your autonomic nervous system.

When chiropractic care is combined with therapy, movement, breathwork, good sleep, and appropriate support, many of our patients find that everything works better. The body is less tense. The nervous system is more resilient. The work they’re doing in other areas of their health has more traction.

Practical Steps for Anxiety Support at The Wellness Tribe

When patients come to us with anxiety as a primary concern, here’s the general approach:

We assess the upper cervical spine and the full spinal column for subluxations — with particular attention to areas that have the most influence on the autonomic nervous system. We use gentle, specific adjustments appropriate to your body and your sensitivity level. We talk about other nervous system support practices: breathwork, movement, sleep hygiene, screen time, and nutrition. And we build a care plan that’s sustainable and realistic for your life.

Many of our anxiety patients come weekly initially, then shift to bi-weekly or monthly maintenance once they’ve established a new baseline of regulation. They tend to know when they need an adjustment — because they can feel the difference.

Your nervous system wants to be in balance. It wants to rest, digest, repair, and restore. Sometimes it just needs a little help finding its way back.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

“Mind-body-spirit.” It’s a phrase that gets used a lot in wellness spaces — sometimes so much that it starts to feel like wallpaper. Meaningful in theory, easy to nod at, hard to actually define.

But here’s the thing: the mind-body-spirit connection isn’t just a wellness slogan. It’s a description of how you actually work. And once you understand it in concrete terms — once you see how your thoughts affect your physiology, how your physical state affects your emotional experience, and how your sense of meaning and connection influences your biological health — it stops being abstract and starts being genuinely useful.

At The Wellness Tribe, this framework sits at the foundation of everything we do. So let’s unpack it.

The Body Is Not a Machine

Let’s start with what might be the most important reframe.

Western medicine, for most of its modern history, has treated the body as an extraordinarily sophisticated machine — a collection of parts and systems that can be examined, diagnosed, and fixed more or less independently of each other. The cardiologist handles the heart. The gastroenterologist handles the gut. The psychiatrist handles the mind. The orthopedist handles the spine.

This approach has produced remarkable advances. We’re not dismissing it.

But it has also created a profound blind spot: the assumption that these systems are separable. That what happens in your mind stays in your mind. That what happens in your body doesn’t affect your mental and emotional state. That spirit — whatever that means to you — is a nice add-on, not a health variable.

The science increasingly tells a very different story.

Your Mind and Body Are One System

The field of psychoneuroimmunology — a word that basically means “the study of how psychology, the nervous system, and the immune system interact” — has spent decades documenting just how inseparable these systems are.

Here’s some of what the research tells us:

Chronic stress suppresses the immune system. When you’re under sustained psychological stress, your body produces elevated cortisol, which directly impairs immune function. People under chronic stress get sick more often, heal more slowly, and have higher rates of inflammatory conditions.

Emotions are physical events. When you feel grief, your heart rate, blood pressure, cortisol levels, and even the electrical activity of your heart change measurably. When you feel joy or love, your body releases oxytocin, dopamine, and other neurochemicals that have direct effects on immunity, cardiovascular health, and pain perception. Emotions are not just mental events — they are full-body physiological experiences.

Trauma lives in the body. Research on trauma — perhaps most famously documented in Bessel van der Kolk’s work — has shown that unresolved emotional trauma leaves physical signatures in the body: patterns of muscle tension, altered autonomic nervous system function, changed hormonal responses, and even changes in gene expression. This is why somatic (body-based) approaches to trauma are so essential.

Beliefs affect biology. Placebo research has demonstrated that belief alone can produce measurable physiological changes — pain relief, immune activation, even symptomatic improvement in serious conditions. Your expectation of healing is itself a health variable.

The Role of the Nervous System as the Bridge

If the mind, body, and spirit are one integrated system, the nervous system is the bridge that connects them.

Your nervous system processes every experience — physical sensation, emotion, thought, memory, spiritual experience — and translates it into physiological responses. Every thought you have triggers a cascade of neurochemical events. Every physical sensation is interpreted through the lens of your emotional state and life history. Every meaningful experience — a birth, a death, a moment of beauty, a sense of belonging — registers in the body.

This is why we care so deeply about nervous system health at The Wellness Tribe. A nervous system that is well-regulated — free of structural interference, not locked in chronic stress response, well-rested and nourished — is a nervous system that can process the full range of human experience with resilience and adaptability.

And a nervous system that is dysregulated — held in chronic sympathetic activation by subluxations, stress, or unresolved emotional patterns — creates a whole-body environment of dis-ease that affects every aspect of health.

The Spirit Piece: Why Meaning and Connection Matter for Your Health

This is the part that often gets left out of health conversations — and it shouldn’t be.

Research on health and longevity consistently identifies a few factors that go beyond diet, exercise, and medical care in predicting who thrives: a sense of purpose, social connection, belonging, and a relationship with something larger than oneself. These are what we might loosely call “spiritual” dimensions of health — not necessarily religious, but fundamentally about meaning, connection, and the experience of being part of something beyond your individual self.

The Blue Zones research — which studied the world’s longest-lived populations — found that strong community ties, a sense of purpose, and spiritual practice were consistent predictors of healthy longevity. Not as adjuncts to physical health, but as core drivers of it.

Loneliness, by contrast, has been identified as a public health crisis. Chronic loneliness increases mortality risk more than obesity and about as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Social isolation isn’t just emotionally painful — it’s physiologically harmful.

This is why community is so central to what we’ve built at The Wellness Tribe. The name isn’t an accident. We genuinely believe that belonging — feeling known, supported, and connected — is a health variable. It’s not a nice extra. It’s part of the medicine.

What This Looks Like in Practice

How does understanding the mind-body-spirit connection change the way you approach your health?

It means paying attention to all three layers. If you’re physically unwell, it’s worth asking not just “what structural or biochemical problem is causing this?” but also “what is my stress level, my emotional state, my sense of meaning and connection — and might these be contributing?”

It means not fragmenting your care. Seek practitioners who see you as a whole person. Who ask about your life, not just your symptoms. Who understand that a persistent physical complaint might have emotional roots, and that emotional distress might have physical roots.

It means taking your inner life seriously as a health practice. Your relationships, your sense of purpose, your creative expression, your spiritual practice (whatever form that takes for you) — these are not luxuries or add-ons. They are foundational to your health.

It means the body is always communicating. Pain, fatigue, illness, and dysfunction are not random failures of the machine. They are the body’s intelligent communication that something — physical, chemical, emotional, or spiritual — needs attention. Learning to listen to that communication, rather than simply suppressing it, is one of the most powerful things you can do for your long-term health.

Our Role in Your Whole-Person Health

At The Wellness Tribe, we work primarily through the physical layer — the nervous system, the spine, the body. But we never lose sight of the fact that the physical is inseparable from the mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of who you are.

When we remove interference from your nervous system, we’re not just helping your back. We’re creating the conditions for your whole self to function better — more regulated, more resilient, more capable of experiencing and expressing health in all its dimensions.

We’re also committed to being a community — a tribe, genuinely — where people feel known, welcomed, and supported. Because we believe that belonging is part of the healing too.

Your health is a whole-life project. We’d be honored to be part of it.

Come find your tribe.

By Dr. Maggie McInnes | The Wellness Tribe | Denver, CO

Here’s a number that should give you pause: the average American now spends over 7 hours a day looking at screens. Phones, laptops, tablets, monitors — we are a species that has fundamentally reorganized our physical existence around small glowing rectangles, and our spines are paying the price.

If you’ve noticed that your neck and upper back feel perpetually tight, that you have more headaches than you used to, that your shoulders have started creeping up toward your ears as a default setting, or that you catch yourself slumped in a way that would have horrified your grandmother — you’re not imagining it. You’re experiencing what happens when a body built for movement, variety, and three-dimensional engagement spends its days folded around a screen.

The good news: this is understandable, it’s reversible, and there’s a lot you can do about it — starting today.

What “Tech Neck” Actually Is

“Tech neck” isn’t just a catchy phrase. It describes a very real biomechanical phenomenon with measurable effects on the spine.

When you’re looking at a phone held at lap or chest height, your head is tilted forward. This might not sound like a big deal — but consider the physics. The average adult head weighs 10–12 pounds in a neutral, balanced position. For every inch it moves forward, the effective load on the cervical spine increases dramatically. At a 45-degree forward tilt, the force on the neck is equivalent to carrying a 49-pound weight. At 60 degrees — the angle many of us adopt while scrolling — it jumps to about 60 pounds.

Your cervical spine was not designed to manage that load for hours at a time.

Over time, the result is predictable: the muscles at the back of the neck and upper back become chronically fatigued and overloaded. The muscles at the front of the neck and chest shorten and tighten. The natural cervical curve (the gentle forward curve that should be present in your neck) begins to flatten or reverse. Vertebrae shift. Discs compress. Nerves get irritated. And subluxations develop that affect not just local pain — but the neurological function of everything those nerves govern.

The Downstream Effects Nobody Talks About

Most people know that bad posture causes neck pain and headaches. But the effects of chronic forward head posture extend well beyond discomfort in the neck and shoulders.

Breathing: Forward head posture compresses the chest and restricts the movement of the rib cage, reducing lung capacity. Shallow, restricted breathing keeps the nervous system in a mild state of stress activation — which means your posture is literally affecting your mood and anxiety levels.

Digestion: The vagus nerve — which governs digestion among many other things — passes directly through the cervical spine. Compression and tension in the cervical region can impair vagal function, which may contribute to sluggish digestion, reflux, and bloating.

Energy levels: Chronic muscular tension is metabolically expensive. Your body is burning energy just to hold itself in a position it wasn’t designed for. Many people notice a significant improvement in energy when they address postural patterns — not because anything magical happened, but because their body stopped fighting itself.

Mood and mental clarity: Research has shown that posture affects mood — not just metaphorically but physiologically. Upright posture is associated with greater confidence, more positive affect, and better cognitive function. Slumped posture is associated with increased depressive symptoms and fatigue. Your posture is quite literally shaping how you experience yourself.

Neurological function: This is the big one from a chiropractic standpoint. The cervical spine houses nerves that affect the brainstem, the autonomic nervous system, and every function of the body below the neck. Chronic cervical subluxations from tech neck aren’t just a pain problem — they’re a neurological interference problem.

What’s Happening in Kids

We’d be remiss not to mention children here, because the long-term consequences of early screen exposure on developing spines are genuinely concerning.

The cervical spine in children is still developing. The musculature is less robust. And children are, if anything, spending even more time in screen-forward postures than adults — bent over tablets, gaming devices, and phones for hours every day.

We’re seeing younger and younger patients with cervical and thoracic changes that used to be associated with middle-aged adults. Forward head posture, loss of cervical curve, and upper thoracic hyperkyphosis (the “hunchback” rounding of the upper back) are increasingly common in adolescents and even young children.

This matters beyond posture and pain. A developing spine that sets into dysfunctional patterns carries those patterns forward into adulthood — and the neurological effects of chronic cervical subluxation during a period of rapid brain and nervous system development are not trivial.

If you have children who spend significant time on screens, regular chiropractic assessment is genuinely worth considering — not as an alarm bell, but as a proactive investment in their developing nervous systems.

What You Can Do: Practical Postural Strategies

The solution to tech neck isn’t to throw your phone into the Platte River (tempting as that sometimes sounds). It’s to make intentional changes to how you use technology and how you support your body through the demands of modern life.

Raise your screens. The single most impactful change most people can make is bringing their phone or monitor up to eye level. This eliminates the forward head tilt that drives most tech neck damage. Invest in a phone stand, a monitor riser, or a laptop stand — your spine will thank you.

Take movement breaks. Every 30–45 minutes, stand up, move, look at something in the distance, and reset your posture. Set a timer if you need to. Even 2–3 minutes of movement breaks the cycle of static loading on the spine.

Strengthen your deep neck flexors. The deep muscles at the front of your neck are often weak in people with forward head posture, while the muscles at the back are chronically overloaded. Simple chin tuck exercises — gently drawing your chin back to create length in the back of the neck — can begin to rebalance this pattern.

Open your chest. Doorway stretches, chest openers, and thoracic extension over a rolled towel or foam roller counteract the forward rounding that screen time promotes. Even a few minutes daily makes a meaningful difference.

Be mindful of your sleep position. Many people undo the work of postural correction during the day by sleeping with too many pillows or in a position that compresses the cervical spine. A single supportive pillow that keeps your neck in a neutral position is ideal for most people.

The Chiropractic Piece

All of the strategies above are valuable — and they work significantly better when the spine is in proper alignment.

When chronic forward head posture has created subluxations in the cervical and thoracic spine, those misalignments don’t self-correct with exercise and awareness alone. The joints need to be specifically mobilized and realigned. The nervous system needs the interference removed. And the surrounding muscles and ligaments — which have adapted to the dysfunctional pattern over months or years — need support in finding a new normal.

At The Wellness Tribe, we see tech neck in almost every age group — from teenagers whose cervical curves are already compromising to adults who’ve been “getting by” with chronic neck tension for years. In every case, our approach is the same: assess the full picture, address the subluxations specifically and gently, support the patient with postural education, and work together toward a spine that functions the way it was designed to.

Because your spine is not just structural support. It’s the housing for your spinal cord — the primary pathway of your nervous system. How you care for it shapes how you feel, how you function, and how you age.

You don’t have to live with a tight neck and a foggy head as the price of participation in modern life. There’s another way.

Come find your tribe.
