You’re exhausted, but you can’t fall asleep. Or you fall asleep easily but wake up multiple times throughout the night. Or you sleep through the night but wake up feeling like you barely rested at all. Maybe you can’t get comfortable—your neck hurts, your back aches, you can’t find a position that doesn’t create pain or discomfort somewhere.

You’ve tried everything. New pillows. Different mattresses. Melatonin. Magnesium. White noise machines. Sleep apps. You’ve optimized your bedroom temperature, eliminated screen time before bed, and established a consistent bedtime routine. Some of these things help a little, but you’re still not sleeping well.

What if the problem isn’t just about sleep hygiene or supplements? What if the quality of your sleep is connected to how your body—specifically your spine and nervous system—is functioning?

At The Wellness Tribe in Denver, Colorado, we work with many people who are struggling with sleep issues. Our founder, Dr. Maggie McInnes, (specializing in pediatric and perinatal chiropractic specifically) takes a holistic, vitalistic approach to chiropractic that recognizes the profound connection between spinal health, nervous system function, and sleep quality.

While chiropractic care isn’t a “cure” for insomnia, many people find that addressing spinal dysfunction and supporting nervous system balance significantly improves their ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up feeling rested.

The Sleep Crisis: You’re Not Alone

If you’re struggling with sleep, you’re far from alone. According to the CDC, one in three adults doesn’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. Insomnia affects millions of Americans, and chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to virtually every major health condition—obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, weakened immune function, and even shortened lifespan.

Poor sleep doesn’t just make you tired. It affects:

Your cognitive function—memory, focus, decision-making

Your emotional regulation—mood, stress response, anxiety levels

Your physical performance—strength, coordination, reaction time

Your hormones—appetite regulation, metabolism, stress hormones

Your immune system—ability to fight infection and illness

Your pain perception—chronic pain is worse when you don’t sleep well

Your overall quality of life

We spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping (or trying to). The quality of that sleep profoundly affects the quality of the other two-thirds. If you’re not sleeping well, everything else suffers.

The Spine-Sleep Connection: Why Your Back Matters for Your Sleep

Most people don’t think about their spine when they’re struggling with sleep. But your spinal health and nervous system function play a significant role in your ability to sleep well.

Physical Discomfort and Pain

This is the most obvious connection. If your back hurts, your neck is stiff, or you have pain anywhere in your body, it’s hard to get comfortable and stay asleep. You might:

Struggle to find a comfortable sleeping position

Wake up when you roll over or change positions

Wake up with pain or stiffness

Lie awake because you’re uncomfortable

Sleep lightly because your body can’t fully relax

Common sources of sleep-disrupting pain include:

Lower back pain. When your pelvis is misaligned or your lower back isn’t moving well, lying down can create discomfort. You might struggle to find a position that doesn’t put pressure on sensitive areas.

Neck pain and stiffness. If your neck is restricted or your cervical spine is misaligned, every pillow feels wrong. You wake up with a stiff neck or headaches.

Hip pain. Side sleeping can be excruciating if your hips aren’t aligned properly or if you have SI joint dysfunction.

Mid-back and rib pain. Restrictions in your thoracic spine or misaligned ribs can make deep breathing uncomfortable, which affects your ability to relax and fall asleep.

Shoulder pain. Frozen shoulder, rotator cuff issues, or thoracic spine restrictions can make it painful to lie on your side or raise your arm overhead.

Chiropractic care addresses these sources of pain by restoring proper alignment, improving joint mobility, releasing muscle tension, and supporting your body’s natural healing processes. When your body isn’t in pain, sleep comes more easily.

Nervous System Dysregulation

Here’s where the connection gets deeper and more interesting. Your sleep isn’t just about physical comfort—it’s fundamentally controlled by your nervous system. And your nervous system’s ability to regulate sleep is intimately connected to spinal health.

The Autonomic Nervous System and Sleep

Your autonomic nervous system has two branches:

Sympathetic nervous system—”fight or flight.” This is your stress response system. When it’s activated, your heart rate increases, your breathing quickens, your muscles tense, stress hormones flood your system, and your body is alert and ready for action. You’re not designed to sleep in this state.

Parasympathetic nervous system—”rest and digest.” This is your relaxation and recovery system. When it’s activated, your heart rate slows, your breathing deepens, your muscles relax, stress hormones decrease, and your body shifts into repair and recovery mode. This is the state you need to be in to fall asleep and sleep deeply.

The problem: many people are stuck in chronic sympathetic dominance. Their nervous system is stuck in “fight or flight” mode, even when there’s no real threat. Chronic stress, poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, inflammation, pain, and yes—spinal dysfunction—all keep your nervous system in this heightened state.

When your sympathetic nervous system is overactive, you can’t fall asleep easily. Your mind races, your body feels wired, you startle at small noises, and even when you do fall asleep, you sleep lightly and wake frequently.

How Spinal Dysfunction Affects Your Nervous System

Your spine houses and protects your spinal cord—the major communication pathway between your brain and your body. When vertebrae are misaligned or not moving properly (subluxations), it can create interference in nervous system function.

This interference can keep your nervous system in a state of heightened alert—stuck in sympathetic dominance. Your body perceives the dysfunction as a threat, and your nervous system responds accordingly.

Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper spinal alignment and motion, which can reduce nervous system interference and help shift your body out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and digest” mode—the state where sleep happens naturally.

Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments affect autonomic nervous system function, promoting parasympathetic activity and reducing sympathetic dominance.

Stress, Tension, and the Sleep Cycle

Physical stress and emotional stress aren’t separate—they’re intimately connected, and both manifest in your body.

When you’re stressed (whether from work deadlines, relationship issues, financial worries, or just the demands of daily life), your body responds physically:

Your shoulders hunch forward

Your jaw clenches

Your neck and upper back muscles tighten

Your breathing becomes shallow

Your posture shifts

Over time, this chronic muscle tension and postural stress create restrictions and misalignments in your spine. These physical patterns then reinforce the stress response, creating a feedback loop.

You’re stressed, so your body tenses. Your body is tense, so your nervous system stays in stress mode. Your nervous system is in stress mode, so you can’t relax. You can’t relax, so you can’t sleep well. You don’t sleep well, so you’re more stressed. And the cycle continues.

Chiropractic care can help break this cycle by:

Releasing chronic muscle tension

Restoring proper spinal alignment

Improving your body’s ability to move and breathe

Supporting nervous system balance

Helping your body shift out of chronic stress response

Many people report feeling calmer, more relaxed, and less “wound up” after chiropractic adjustments. This isn’t just about pain relief—it’s about shifting your nervous system into a more balanced state where sleep can happen naturally.

Common Sleep Issues and How Chiropractic Can Help

Let’s look at specific sleep challenges and how chiropractic care might address them.

Difficulty Falling Asleep (Sleep Onset Insomnia)

If you lie in bed for 30 minutes, an hour, or longer, unable to fall asleep despite being tired, it’s often a sign that your nervous system can’t shift into sleep mode.

How chiropractic can help:

Adjustments that promote parasympathetic nervous system activity

Releasing tension in your neck and upper back, which affects your stress response

Addressing physical discomfort that might be keeping you alert

Supporting overall nervous system balance and regulation

Many people find that they fall asleep more easily and quickly after starting regular chiropractic care.

Waking Up During the Night (Sleep Maintenance Insomnia)

If you fall asleep fine but wake up multiple times during the night—whether from pain, discomfort, or no apparent reason—it disrupts your sleep cycles and prevents you from getting the deep, restorative sleep you need.

How chiropractic can help:

Reducing pain and physical discomfort that wake you up

Improving your ability to move and change positions comfortably during sleep

Supporting deeper, more continuous sleep by balancing your nervous system

Addressing underlying dysfunction that might be creating subtle discomfort

Waking Up Unrested

If you sleep through the night but wake up feeling like you barely rested—tired, groggy, unrefreshed—it suggests you’re not getting enough deep sleep or REM sleep. You might be sleeping lightly all night, never dropping into the restorative stages of sleep your body needs.

How chiropractic can help:

Supporting nervous system function so your body can cycle through sleep stages properly

Reducing pain and discomfort that might prevent deep sleep

Helping your body relax more fully so you can achieve deeper sleep stages

Sleep Apnea and Breathing Issues

While chiropractic care isn’t a treatment for sleep apnea (which should be evaluated and managed by a sleep specialist), there are connections between spinal health and breathing function.

Restrictions in your neck and upper back can affect:

Your airway position and function

Your ability to breathe deeply and fully

Diaphragm function and rib cage mobility

Some research suggests that chiropractic care, particularly adjustments to the cervical spine and upper thoracic region, may help improve breathing patterns and potentially reduce some symptoms in people with mild sleep apnea.

If you have or suspect sleep apnea, we’ll work collaboratively with your medical provider to ensure you’re getting comprehensive care.

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS)—that irresistible urge to move your legs, especially at night—can significantly disrupt sleep. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, nervous system dysfunction and spinal issues may play a role in some cases.

Some people with RLS find relief through chiropractic care, particularly adjustments to the lumbar spine and pelvis, which affect the nerves that serve the legs.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Many people grind their teeth at night without even knowing it. Bruxism is often related to stress and nervous system dysregulation, but it can also be connected to jaw tension, neck dysfunction, and upper cervical misalignments.

Chiropractic care that addresses the upper cervical spine, jaw mechanics, and overall nervous system balance may help reduce teeth grinding and its associated problems—jaw pain, headaches, tooth damage, and disrupted sleep.

Beyond Adjustments: A Holistic Approach to Better Sleep

At The Wellness Tribe, we recognize that sleep is influenced by many factors, not just spinal alignment. While chiropractic care can be a powerful tool for improving sleep, it works best as part of a comprehensive approach.

Sleep Hygiene and Environment

We provide guidance on optimizing your sleep environment and habits:

Bedroom environment:

Keep your room cool (65-68°F is ideal for most people)

Make it as dark as possible (blackout curtains, eliminate light sources)

Minimize noise or use white noise if needed

Ensure your mattress and pillows support your spine properly

Sleep routine:

Establish a consistent sleep schedule (same bedtime and wake time)

Create a relaxing bedtime routine (reading, gentle stretching, meditation)

Limit screen time at least an hour before bed

Avoid caffeine after noon and alcohol close to bedtime

Stress Management

Since stress is one of the primary sleep disruptors, we help you develop strategies for managing stress:

Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques

Regular physical activity (but not too close to bedtime)

Mindfulness or meditation practices

Time management and boundary-setting

Addressing sources of chronic stress in your life

Movement and Exercise

Regular physical activity improves sleep quality, but timing matters. We help you understand:

How to incorporate regular movement into your day

Why exercising too close to bedtime can interfere with sleep

Gentle evening stretches that promote relaxation

How your activity level affects your sleep

Nutrition and Supplements

What you eat and when you eat it affects your sleep:

Foods that support sleep:

Tryptophan-containing foods (turkey, eggs, cheese)

Complex carbohydrates in the evening

Adequate protein throughout the day

Foods and substances to limit:

Alcohol (disrupts sleep architecture)

Large meals close to bedtime

High-sugar foods that create blood sugar swings

We may also discuss supplements that support sleep, such as magnesium, melatonin, or herbal remedies, though we always recommend working with your healthcare provider before starting new supplements.

Addressing Underlying Health Issues

Poor sleep can be a symptom of underlying health conditions:

Sleep apnea

Restless legs syndrome

If we suspect an underlying condition is contributing to your sleep problems, we’ll refer you to appropriate specialists and work collaboratively to support your overall health.

What to Expect: Chiropractic Care for Sleep at The Wellness Tribe

If you come to The Wellness Tribe with sleep concerns, here’s what you can expect:

Comprehensive Assessment

We’ll start by understanding your sleep challenges in detail:

What does your typical night look like?

How long have you been struggling with sleep?

What have you already tried?

Are there other symptoms accompanying your sleep issues?

What’s your stress level and lifestyle like?

We’ll also assess:

Your spinal alignment and mobility

Areas of pain, tension, or restriction

Your posture and movement patterns

Your nervous system function

Factors in your lifestyle that might be affecting sleep

Personalized Care Plan

Based on our assessment, we’ll create a care plan that might include:

Chiropractic adjustments focused on areas that are affecting your nervous system function, pain levels, and overall body stress.

Soft tissue work to release chronic muscle tension, particularly in your neck, shoulders, and upper back—areas that strongly affect your stress response.

Specific exercises and stretches to reduce tension, improve mobility, and promote relaxation before bed.

Lifestyle guidance on sleep hygiene, stress management, nutrition, and other factors affecting your sleep.

Referrals if needed to sleep specialists, mental health providers, or other practitioners if we identify issues outside our scope of practice.

Tracking Progress

Sleep improvements often happen gradually. We’ll work with you to track changes:

Are you falling asleep more easily?

Are you waking up less frequently?

Do you feel more rested when you wake up?

Is your pain or discomfort decreasing?

Do you feel less stressed and more relaxed overall?

Some people notice improvements within a few sessions. For others, especially if sleep issues have been chronic, it may take several weeks of consistent care to see significant changes.

Real Stories: How Chiropractic Care Improved Sleep

“I hadn’t slept well in years. I’d wake up 3-4 times every night, and I could never figure out why. I was exhausted all the time. After starting care at The Wellness Tribe, I noticed that I was waking up less often. After a few months, I was sleeping through the night most nights. The difference in my energy level and mood has been incredible. I didn’t realize how much my sleep was affecting everything else.” — Jennifer, Denver

“My neck pain was keeping me awake. Every pillow felt wrong, and I’d wake up with headaches. After just a few adjustments, my neck felt better and I could actually get comfortable at night. I’m sleeping better than I have in years, and my headaches are gone.” — David, Littleton

“I’ve always been a light sleeper and had trouble falling asleep. I’d lie in bed with my mind racing, unable to relax. I started seeing Dr. Maggie for back pain, but I noticed something unexpected—I was falling asleep more easily. I felt calmer and less ‘wired’ at night. My back pain improved, but the sleep improvement was almost more valuable. I finally feel like I can rest.” — Rachel, Highlands Ranch

“I work a high-stress job and my sleep was suffering. I’d wake up at 3 AM with my mind racing and couldn’t get back to sleep. Along with the chiropractic adjustments, the stress management strategies and breathing exercises I learned have made a huge difference. I’m sleeping more consistently and handling stress better during the day.” — Michael, Denver

The Research: What Science Says About Chiropractic and Sleep

While research specifically on chiropractic care and sleep is still emerging, existing studies are promising:

Autonomic nervous system effects. Research in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics shows that spinal manipulation affects autonomic nervous system function, promoting parasympathetic (rest and digest) activity—the state needed for sleep.

Pain reduction. Numerous studies show chiropractic care is effective for reducing various types of pain. Since pain is a major sleep disruptor, reducing pain naturally improves sleep. A systematic review found chiropractic care effective for managing musculoskeletal pain, which often interferes with sleep.

Stress and cortisol levels. Research suggests chiropractic care may help reduce stress and cortisol levels. A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found reductions in cortisol after chiropractic adjustments.

Quality of life improvements. Studies consistently show that people receiving chiropractic care report improvements in quality of life measures, which often include sleep quality. Research in BMC Health Services Research found that chiropractic patients reported improvements in sleep as well as other quality of life indicators.

Infant sleep and colic. Interestingly, some of the strongest evidence for chiropractic care and sleep comes from studies on infants. Research on colicky babies receiving chiropractic care has found improvements in crying and sleep. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that infants with colic who received chiropractic care showed significant reductions in crying time and improvements in sleep.

While more research is needed, existing evidence supports what many practitioners and patients have observed—that addressing spinal health and nervous system function can have positive effects on sleep quality.

Sleep Positions and Spinal Health

Since we spend so much time sleeping, your sleep position matters for your spinal health—and your spinal health affects how comfortable you are in different positions.

Best Sleep Positions for Spinal Health

Back sleeping is generally considered the best position for spinal alignment, especially if you:

Use a supportive pillow that maintains your neck’s natural curve

Place a pillow under your knees to support your lower back

Ensure your mattress provides adequate support

Side sleeping is the most common position and can be good for your spine if you:

Use a pillow that keeps your neck aligned with your spine

Place a pillow between your knees to keep your hips aligned

Avoid curling into a tight fetal position

Stomach sleeping is generally the hardest on your spine because it:

Forces your neck to turn to one side for extended periods

Can create excessive arch in your lower back

Makes it difficult to maintain neutral spinal alignment

If you’re a stomach sleeper and can’t change, try placing a thin pillow under your pelvis and using a very flat pillow (or no pillow) for your head.

When Pain Dictates Position

Sometimes pain or discomfort forces you into specific sleeping positions. If you can only sleep comfortably in one position, it’s worth getting evaluated—this often indicates underlying dysfunction that can be addressed.

Chiropractic care can help improve your ability to sleep comfortably in various positions by addressing restrictions and misalignments that create discomfort.

Creating Your Personal Sleep Support Plan

Improving your sleep typically requires a multi-faceted approach. Here’s how to create a comprehensive sleep support plan:

1. Address Physical Factors

Schedule regular chiropractic care to optimize spinal health and nervous system function

Ensure your mattress and pillows properly support your spine

Address any pain or physical discomfort

2. Optimize Your Sleep Environment

Dark, cool, quiet bedroom

Comfortable bedding

Minimal electronic devices

Consider white noise or other sound management

3. Establish Healthy Sleep Habits

Consistent sleep schedule (even on weekends)

Relaxing bedtime routine

No screens 1 hour before bed

Limited caffeine and alcohol

Regular exercise (but not too close to bedtime)

4. Manage Stress

Regular movement and exercise

Breathing exercises or meditation

Time for relaxation and activities you enjoy

Address sources of chronic stress

Consider therapy or counseling if needed

5. Support Your Body Nutritionally

Magnesium-rich foods

Adequate protein throughout the day

Balanced blood sugar

Proper hydration (but not too close to bedtime)

Consider appropriate supplements

6. Track and Adjust

Keep a sleep journal to identify patterns

Notice what helps and what doesn’t

Be patient—sleep improvements often take time

Adjust your approach based on what you learn

The Long-Term Benefits of Better Sleep

When you finally start sleeping well, the benefits extend far beyond just feeling less tired:

Physical health improvements:

Reduced inflammation

Better immune function

Improved metabolism and weight management

Lower risk of chronic diseases

Better pain management

Enhanced athletic performance and recovery

Mental and emotional benefits:

Improved mood and emotional regulation

Reduced anxiety and depression symptoms

Better stress management

Enhanced cognitive function—memory, focus, creativity

Improved decision-making ability

Quality of life:

More energy for activities you enjoy

Better relationships (when you’re well-rested, you’re more patient and present)

Increased productivity

Greater sense of well-being

Enhanced ability to handle life’s challenges

Sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s a fundamental pillar of health. Investing in your sleep is investing in your overall well-being.

“I don’t have any back pain. Why would I see a chiropractor?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear at The Wellness Tribe. And it makes sense—most people’s first experience with chiropractic care happens when something hurts. A thrown-out back, a stiff neck, sciatica that won’t quit. You’re in pain, you need relief, and chiropractic care can help.

But here’s what many people don’t realize: waiting until you’re in pain to address your spinal health is like waiting until your check engine light comes on to change your oil. By the time symptoms appear, dysfunction has often been present for weeks, months, or even years.

At The Wellness Tribe in Denver, Colorado, we take a different approach. Our founder, Dr. Maggie McInnes, practices vitalistic, preventative chiropractic care—supporting your body’s optimal function before problems arise, not just responding to symptoms after they develop.

This shift in perspective—from reactive sick care to proactive wellness care—can transform not just how you feel, but how you live.

The Problem with Waiting for Symptoms

Your body is remarkably good at adapting and compensating. When something isn’t working quite right, your body finds a workaround. A restricted joint in your mid-back? No problem—your lower back and neck pick up the slack. A misaligned pelvis? Your body shifts your posture to compensate. Tight hip flexors from sitting all day? Your back works overtime to keep you upright.

This is your body’s brilliance at work. It’s constantly adapting to keep you functioning. But here’s the catch: compensation has a cost.

The Adaptation-Compensation-Symptom Progression

Stage 1: Silent Dysfunction. Something in your body isn’t moving or functioning optimally. It could be that a vertebra is slightly misaligned from that fender bender three months ago. Maybe your pelvis shifted after sleeping on your stomach wrong. Or, maybe years of sitting at a desk have created restrictions in your thoracic spine. You feel fine. No pain, no obvious problems. But the dysfunction is there.

Stage 2: Compensation. Your body adapts. Other joints, muscles, and structures take on extra load to work around the area that isn’t functioning well. Your nervous system adjusts. Movement patterns change subtly. You still feel fine. Maybe you notice some stiffness in the morning that goes away once you move around, or occasional tension in your shoulders by the end of the workday. Nothing that seems like a big deal.

Stage 3: Chronic Compensation. The structures that have been compensating for months or years start to wear down. Muscles stay chronically tight. Joints develop wear patterns. Your posture shifts. You might notice you’re not as flexible as you used to be, or certain movements feel harder. Maybe you can’t turn your head as far to back up your car. Maybe you have to warm up longer before exercise. You chalk it up to getting older.

Stage 4: Symptoms Emerge. Finally, something gives. Maybe it’s a sudden injury from a simple movement—bending over to pick up a shoe and your back goes out. Or, maybe it’s chronic pain that gradually worsens—tension headaches, persistent lower back discomfort, hip pain that won’t go away. Maybe it’s decreased performance, frequent injuries, or just feeling “off” in your body. Now you’re in pain, and now you seek care.

Here’s the thing: by the time you reach Stage 4, you’re not dealing with a simple, acute problem. You’re dealing with a chronic pattern of dysfunction that has been building for months or years. And while we can absolutely help you at this stage, it takes more time, more effort, and more intervention to reverse patterns that have been established over a long period.

The Hidden Cost of Waiting

When you wait for symptoms to appear before addressing your health, you miss the opportunity to:

Prevent injuries before they happen. Many injuries aren’t really “acute” at all—they’re the final expression of chronic dysfunction. The back that “goes out” from picking up a laundry basket wasn’t injured by the laundry basket. It was already compromised from months or years of poor function.

Maintain optimal function as you age. The stiffness, aches, and limitations that many people accept as “just part of getting older” are often the result of accumulated dysfunction over time, not aging itself.

Perform at your best. Whether you’re an athlete or just want to keep up with your kids, your body performs best when it’s functioning optimally. Subtle dysfunctions that don’t cause pain can still limit your strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance.

Support your overall health. Your nervous system controls every function in your body. When your spine isn’t moving well and your nervous system isn’t functioning optimally, it can affect everything from your immune function to your digestion to your stress response.

What Is Preventative Chiropractic Care?

Preventative chiropractic care is about supporting your body’s optimal function before symptoms arise. It’s proactive, not reactive. It’s about wellness, not just the absence of disease.

Instead of waiting for your body to break down and then trying to fix it, preventative care focuses on:

Identifying and addressing dysfunction early. Through regular assessments, we can identify areas of restriction, misalignment, or dysfunction before they cause symptoms or lead to injury.

Supporting your nervous system’s optimal function. Your nervous system coordinates every function in your body. When your spine is aligned and moving well, your nervous system can function without interference, supporting your body’s innate ability to heal, adapt, and thrive.

Maintaining mobility and flexibility. Regular adjustments help keep your joints mobile and your spine flexible, which supports healthy movement patterns and reduces wear and tear on your body.

Promoting balance and adaptation. Life is stressful—physically, chemically, and emotionally. Preventative chiropractic care helps your body adapt to these stresses more effectively, maintaining balance and resilience.

Optimizing your body’s performance. Whether you’re training for a marathon or just want to feel good in your daily life, your body performs best when it’s functioning optimally.

Think of It Like Dental Care

Every day, yo brush your teeth and you go to the dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups. You don’t wait until you have a cavity or need a root canal to see your dentist. Practicing preventative dental care make it easier to maintain healthy teeth—and less painful and expensive—than dealing with dental problems after they develop.

Your spine and nervous system deserve the same proactive care.

Or consider your car. You change the oil regularly, rotate the tires, and get routine maintenance—not because something is broken, but because you want to keep it running well and prevent problems. You don’t wait for your engine to seize before you check the oil.

Your body is infinitely more complex and valuable than your car. It makes sense to give it at least the same level of preventative maintenance.

Who Benefits from Preventative Chiropractic Care?

The short answer? Everyone. But let’s look at some specific examples.

Desk Workers and People with Sedentary Jobs

If you sit at a desk all day, you’re putting your body in a position it wasn’t designed for. Prolonged sitting creates:

Forward head posture and neck strain

Rounded shoulders and mid-back stiffness

Tight hip flexors and weak glutes

Poor spinal alignment and reduced mobility

Even if you feel fine now, these patterns are accumulating stress in your body. Regular chiropractic care can help counteract the effects of prolonged sitting, maintain mobility, and prevent the chronic pain that often develops over time.

Active People and Athletes

If you’re training regularly—running, lifting, cycling, playing sports—you’re placing demands on your body. Even without injury, training creates stress and adaptation. Regular chiropractic care helps:

Maintain optimal alignment for efficient movement

Support recovery between training sessions

Prevent overuse injuries from developing

Identify and address imbalances before they cause problems

Optimize performance by ensuring your body is functioning at its best

Many professional and elite athletes receive regular chiropractic care not because they’re injured, but because they understand that optimal function equals optimal performance.

Parents of Young Children

Parenting is physically demanding. You’re lifting, carrying, bending, and often contorting your body into awkward positions—nursing in the middle of the night, bending over cribs, carrying car seats, wearing babies in carriers. These repetitive stresses can create patterns of dysfunction over time.

Preventative chiropractic care helps you stay healthy and pain-free so you can keep up with the physical demands of parenting.

People with Stressful Jobs or Lives

Stress isn’t just mental—it’s physical. When you’re stressed, your nervous system shifts into “fight or flight” mode. Your muscles tense, your breathing becomes shallow, your posture changes. Chronic stress keeps your body in this heightened state, which takes a toll.

Chiropractic care supports nervous system balance, helping your body shift out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and digest” mode, where healing and recovery can happen.

People Who Want to Age Well

Aging doesn’t have to mean declining function, chronic pain, and loss of independence. Many of the limitations people associate with aging are actually the result of accumulated dysfunction, decreased mobility, and nervous system decline—all of which can be addressed proactively.

Regular chiropractic care throughout your life helps you maintain the mobility, strength, balance, and function you need to stay active and independent as you age.

People with a History of Injuries

If you’ve had previous injuries—car accidents, sports injuries, falls—even if they healed and you feel fine now, those injuries can create lasting effects on how your body moves and functions. Scar tissue, compensatory patterns, and subtle restrictions can persist for years.

Preventative care helps ensure that old injuries don’t continue to affect your body and increase your risk for future problems.

What Does Preventative Care Look Like?

Preventative chiropractic care at The Wellness Tribe is personalized based on your body, your lifestyle, and your goals. But here’s what you can generally expect:

Regular Assessments

Even if you feel great, we regularly assess your spinal alignment, joint mobility, posture, and nervous system function. This allows us to identify and address small issues before they become big problems.

Adjustments to Maintain Optimal Function

Regular adjustments keep your spine aligned and moving well, which supports optimal nervous system function. The frequency of adjustments varies based on your individual needs—some people come weekly, others bi-weekly or monthly.

Education and Empowerment

We teach you about your body, how it works, and what you can do to support your health. This might include exercises to strengthen weak areas, stretches to maintain mobility, ergonomic guidance for your workspace, or lifestyle recommendations.

Lifestyle Support

We look at the whole picture—not just your spine, but your nutrition, sleep, stress management, movement patterns, and overall wellness. We help you identify factors that might be undermining your health and support you in making sustainable changes.

Partnership in Your Wellness Journey

Preventative care is a partnership. We’re not just “fixing” you—we’re working with you to support your body’s optimal function over the long term. You’re an active participant in your health and wellness.

The Science Behind Prevention

Preventative chiropractic care isn’t just a nice idea—it’s supported by research and an understanding of how the body works.

Spinal Health and Nervous System Function

Your spine houses and protects your spinal cord, which is the major communication pathway between your brain and your body. When vertebrae are misaligned or not moving properly (what chiropractors call subluxations), it can interfere with nervous system function.

Research published in Neural Plasticity shows that spinal manipulation affects nervous system function, altering sensory processing, motor control, and even brain function.

The Degenerative Cascade

Spinal dysfunction doesn’t stay static—it progresses. Research has documented the degenerative cascade that occurs when spinal joints aren’t moving properly:

Loss of normal joint motion and alignment

Adhesion formation and muscle spasm

Disc thinning and degeneration

Bone spur formation

Progressive degeneration and loss of function

This process takes years or decades, and it’s often well underway before symptoms appear. Regular chiropractic care can help maintain proper joint motion and alignment, potentially slowing or preventing this degenerative process.

Prevention Is More Effective Than Treatment

A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that maintenance chiropractic care was more effective than short-term treatment in preventing recurrence of lower back pain.

Other research has shown that:

Regular chiropractic care may reduce healthcare costs by preventing the development of chronic conditions

Athletes receiving regular chiropractic care have lower injury rates

Maintenance care improves quality of life measures and functional outcomes

Use It or Lose It

Joints need movement to stay healthy. Movement pumps nutrients into joints and waste products out. When joints don’t move through their full range of motion regularly, they lose mobility, develop adhesions, and degenerate more quickly.

Regular chiropractic adjustments help maintain joint mobility throughout your spine, which supports long-term spinal health.

Common Questions About Preventative Care

“If I start chiropractic care, will I have to keep going forever?”

You don’t “have to” do anything. Chiropractic care is a choice. But here’s the question: do you want to maintain the benefits you’ve gained, or do you want to go back to how things were before?

Think about exercise. If you start working out and get stronger, more flexible, and healthier, do you “have to” keep exercising? No, but if you stop, you’ll gradually lose those gains.

Chiropractic care works the same way. Regular care maintains the benefits—optimal function, better mobility, nervous system balance—that you’ve achieved.

“How often do I need to come in for maintenance care?”

This varies based on your individual needs, lifestyle, stress levels, and goals. Some people benefit from weekly adjustments. Others do well with bi-weekly or monthly visits. We’ll work with you to determine the frequency that best supports your health and wellness.

“Isn’t this just a way to get people to keep paying for care they don’t need?”

We understand this concern, and we’re transparent about our recommendations. Preventative care is always your choice. We provide information about the benefits of regular care and make recommendations based on our assessment of your body and your goals, but you’re always in control of your care plan.

Consider this: most people don’t question the value of regular dental cleanings, annual physical exams, or routine car maintenance. These are accepted forms of preventative care.

Chiropractic maintenance care operates on the same principle—supporting optimal function and preventing problems before they develop.

“What if I can’t afford regular care?”

We understand that cost is a consideration. Many people find that investing in preventative care actually saves money in the long run by preventing more serious (and expensive) health problems. We offer various care packages and payment options to make preventative care more accessible. We’re happy to work with you to find an approach that fits your budget.

“I’m young and healthy. Do I really need preventative care?”

This is actually the best time to start. It’s much easier to maintain good health than to recover it once it’s lost. The patterns of dysfunction that lead to chronic pain and decreased function in middle age often begin in your twenties and thirties—or even earlier. Starting preventative care while you’re young and healthy gives you the best chance of staying that way.

“Can’t I just do exercises and stretches on my own?”

Exercise and stretching are important parts of maintaining your health, and we encourage them. But they can’t replace chiropractic adjustments. Here’s why: if a joint is restricted or misaligned, you can’t stretch or exercise your way to proper alignment. The joint needs to be adjusted to restore proper motion and position. Think of it this way—if your car’s alignment is off, driving it more carefully doesn’t fix the alignment problem. The car needs to be properly aligned.

“How do I know if the care is working if I don’t have symptoms to measure?”

Great question. While symptom relief is one way to measure progress, it’s not the only way—or even the most important way. We measure function, not just symptoms. This might include assessing your range of motion, evaluating movement patterns, checking postural alignment, assessing nervous system function, and tracking your overall sense of well-being, energy levels, sleep quality, and ability to handle stress.

Many people also notice benefits they weren’t expecting—better sleep, more energy, improved digestion, better mood, enhanced athletic performance, or simply feeling more “balanced” in their body.

Real Stories: The Long-Term Benefits of Preventative Care

“I’m a marathon runner, and I started getting adjusted regularly not because I was injured, but because I wanted to stay healthy and perform my best. I’ve been going to The Wellness Tribe for three years now, and I haven’t had a single running injury in that time. I’ve also gotten faster and set several PRs. I’m convinced that keeping my body aligned and functioning well has been a game-changer for my running.” — Lisa, Littleton

“As a software developer, I sit at a computer all day. A few years ago, I started developing neck and shoulder pain. After working with The Wellness Tribe, my pain resolved. But I continued with regular care because I noticed I felt better overall—less tension, better posture, fewer headaches. Now I come in every other week, and it’s become an essential part of how I take care of my body. I think of it like going to the gym—it’s just part of my wellness routine.” — James, Denver

“I’m 38 and have no major health issues, but I wanted to be proactive about my health. I started maintenance care at The Wellness Tribe about a year ago, coming in once a month. I’ve noticed I have more energy, I sleep better, I handle stress better, and I just feel more balanced overall. It’s hard to describe, but I feel like my body is functioning at a higher level. I wish I’d started sooner.” — Amanda, Highlands Ranch

The Philosophy Behind Preventative Care: A Vitalistic Approach

At The Wellness Tribe, our approach to preventative care is rooted in a vitalistic philosophy. This means we believe that:

Your body has an innate intelligence. Your body knows how to heal, adapt, and function optimally. It doesn’t need to be “fixed”—it needs to be supported in doing what it already knows how to do.

Health comes from the inside out. True health isn’t just the absence of symptoms. It’s a state of optimal function where your body is adapting effectively to the stresses of life and expressing its full potential.

The nervous system is the master control system. Your brain and nervous system coordinate every function in your body. When your nervous system is functioning optimally, your body can heal, adapt, and thrive.

Prevention is the highest form of healthcare. The best time to address dysfunction is before it becomes disease. The best time to support your health is before you lose it.

You are an active participant in your health. We’re not here to “fix” you—we’re here to support you in taking an active role in your health and wellness. True wellness comes from the daily choices you make about how you move, what you eat, how you manage stress, and how you care for your body.

This philosophy shapes everything we do at The Wellness Tribe. We’re not just treating symptoms or chasing pain. We’re supporting your body’s optimal function and empowering you to live your healthiest, most vibrant life.

Beyond the Spine: Whole-Body Wellness

While chiropractic care focuses on the spine and nervous system, we recognize that optimal health involves many factors. As part of our preventative care approach, we also provide guidance and support in:

Nutrition and diet. The food you eat affects your inflammation levels, energy, mental clarity, immune function, and overall health. We can help you navigate nutritional choices that support your wellness goals.

Movement and exercise. Your body is designed to move. Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining strength, mobility, cardiovascular health, mental health, and overall function. We help you find sustainable ways to keep your body moving.

Sleep quality. Sleep is when your body heals, repairs, and adapts. Poor sleep undermines every aspect of your health. We help you identify and address factors that might be interfering with your sleep quality.

Stress management. Chronic stress is one of the biggest threats to your health, affecting your nervous system, hormones, immune function, digestion, and more. We help you develop strategies for managing stress and supporting your body’s resilience.

Posture and ergonomics. How you hold your body throughout the day affects your spinal health, muscle tension, and nervous system function. We provide practical guidance on improving your posture and setting up your workspace, car, and home to support your body.

Mindset and mental health. Your mental and emotional state affects your physical health, and vice versa. We support a holistic approach to wellness that includes mental and emotional well-being.

Starting Your Preventative Care Journey

If you’re intrigued by the idea of preventative chiropractic care but aren’t sure where to start, here’s what we recommend:

Schedule Your First Adjustment

Even if you feel fine, an initial appointment can provide valuable information about how your body is functioning. We’ll assess your spinal alignment, joint mobility, posture, and nervous system function, and identify any areas of dysfunction that might not be causing symptoms yet but could lead to problems down the road.

Start with a Short Trial Period

Try regular chiropractic care for 8-12 weeks and pay attention to how you feel. Many people notice benefits they weren’t expecting—better energy, improved sleep, better mood, enhanced athletic performance, or simply feeling more “right” in their body.

Evaluate and Adjust

After your trial period, we’ll reassess and discuss what you’ve noticed. Based on your experience and your goals, we’ll work together to determine what ongoing care looks like for you.

Make It Part of Your Routine

The most successful preventative care happens when it becomes a regular part of your wellness routine, like exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep. Find a frequency that works for you and your lifestyle, and commit to making your spinal and nervous system health a priority.

Investing in Your Future Health

Preventative chiropractic care is an investment in your future health and quality of life. It’s choosing to be proactive rather than reactive. It’s prioritizing your long-term wellness over short-term convenience.

The choices you make today about your health will shape how you feel and function ten, twenty, thirty years from now. Will you wait until problems develop and then try to fix them? Or will you invest in maintaining your health so you can stay active, vital, and thriving throughout your life?

At The Wellness Tribe, we’re passionate about helping people make that shift from sick care to wellness care, from treating symptoms to supporting optimal function, from reacting to problems to preventing them in the first place.

You don’t have to wait until you’re in pain to prioritize your health. In fact, the best time to start is now—when you feel fine.

You’ve been training consistently. You’re putting in the miles, hitting the gym, following your program. But something feels off. Maybe your hip flexor keeps tightening up on long runs. Or, maybe your shoulder doesn’t feel quite right when you press overhead. Maybe you’re not recovering as quickly as you used to, or you’ve hit a plateau you can’t seem to break through.

Or maybe you’re dealing with a nagging injury that won’t fully resolve—IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, lower back pain, shoulder impingement. You’ve tried rest, ice, stretching, foam rolling. The pain improves for a while, then comes right back when you return to training.

Whether you’re a recreational runner training for your first 5K, an experienced marathoner chasing a PR, a CrossFit athlete, a powerlifter, or someone who simply loves strength training, your body needs to function optimally to perform at its best and stay injury-free.

At The Wellness Tribe in Denver, Colorado, we work with active individuals and athletes to optimize movement, enhance performance, prevent injuries, and support recovery. Our founder, Dr. Maggie McInnes, understands the demands of training and competition, and she brings a holistic, vitalistic approach to performance-based chiropractic care.

Why Athletes and Active People Seek Chiropractic Care

Athletic performance isn’t just about how hard you train—it’s about how well your body functions. Your nervous system coordinates every movement, every muscle contraction, every adaptation to training stress. And, your joints need to move through their full range of motion. Your spine needs to be stable yet mobile. Finally, your body needs to be balanced and symmetrical.

When everything is working optimally, you move efficiently, generate power effectively, recover quickly, and stay healthy. When something is off—even slightly—it can affect your performance, increase your injury risk, and limit your potential.

Common Reasons Active People Come to The Wellness Tribe

Injury prevention. Many athletes seek chiropractic care proactively, not because they’re injured, but because they want to stay healthy. Regular adjustments help maintain optimal alignment, identify and address imbalances before they become injuries, and keep the nervous system functioning at its best.

Performance optimization. When your body is aligned and moving well, you can generate more power, move more efficiently, and perform at a higher level. Many athletes notice improvements in strength, speed, endurance, and coordination with regular chiropractic care.

Recovery support. Training creates stress on your body—that’s how you get stronger. But recovery is where the adaptation happens. Chiropractic care supports your body’s ability to recover by reducing muscle tension, improving circulation, supporting nervous system balance, and helping your body adapt to training stress.

Injury management and rehabilitation. If you’re dealing with an injury, chiropractic care can be part of your recovery plan. We don’t just address the site of pain—we look at your entire body to understand why the injury happened and what needs to change to prevent it from recurring.

Breaking through plateaus. Sometimes performance plateaus aren’t about your training program—they’re about how your body is functioning. Addressing restrictions, imbalances, and nervous system interference can help you break through barriers and reach new levels of performance.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Runners

Running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, but it’s also one of the most demanding on your body. Every mile you run involves thousands of foot strikes, each one sending force through your feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine. Over time, even small imbalances or restrictions can lead to overuse injuries.

Common Running Injuries We See

IT band syndrome. That sharp pain on the outside of your knee that shows up a few miles into your run? IT band syndrome is one of the most common running injuries, and it’s often related to hip weakness, poor pelvic alignment, and compensation patterns.

Chiropractic care can help by addressing pelvic and hip alignment, releasing tension in the hip and thigh muscles, identifying and correcting movement patterns that contribute to IT band stress, and working collaboratively with physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles.

Plantar fasciitis. Heel pain that’s worst in the morning or after periods of rest can be debilitating for runners. While plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot, it’s often connected to issues higher up the kinetic chain—tight calves, restricted ankle mobility, poor foot mechanics, or even pelvic misalignment.

We look at your entire lower body to understand why your plantar fascia is overloaded and address the root causes, not just the symptoms.

Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome). Pain around or behind the kneecap is another common complaint among runners. It’s often related to how your kneecap tracks as you run, which is influenced by hip strength, pelvic alignment, foot mechanics, and quadriceps and hamstring balance.

Chiropractic adjustments to the pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle can help restore optimal alignment and movement patterns, reducing stress on the knee joint.

Lower back pain. Running is a repetitive impact activity, and if your pelvis, hips, or spine aren’t moving well, that impact can accumulate and lead to lower back pain. Core weakness, poor running form, and pelvic imbalances all contribute to back pain in runners.

We assess your spinal alignment, pelvic stability, and movement patterns to identify what’s contributing to your pain and create a plan to address it.

Hip pain and hip flexor tightness. Runners often develop tight hip flexors and hip pain from the repetitive hip flexion motion of running. When your hip isn’t moving through its full range of motion, other areas compensate, leading to pain and dysfunction.

Chiropractic adjustments to the hip and pelvis, combined with soft tissue work and targeted stretching and strengthening, can help restore hip mobility and function.

Achilles tendinopathy. Pain and stiffness in your Achilles tendon can sideline you from running for weeks or months if not addressed properly. Achilles issues are often related to calf tightness, poor ankle mobility, foot mechanics, and training errors.

We help identify the factors contributing to your Achilles pain and support your recovery with adjustments, soft tissue work, and guidance on training modifications.

How We Help Runners at The Wellness Tribe

Comprehensive movement assessment. We don’t just look at where it hurts—we assess how you move. We look at your gait, your posture, your joint mobility, and your movement patterns to understand what’s contributing to your injury or limiting your performance.

Spinal and extremity adjustments. We adjust not just your spine, but also your hips, knees, ankles, and feet to ensure optimal alignment and mobility throughout your entire kinetic chain.

Soft tissue work. Tight, restricted muscles and fascia can limit your movement and contribute to injury. We use soft tissue techniques to release tension and improve tissue quality.

Strengthening and mobility exercises. We provide targeted exercises to address weaknesses and restrictions that are contributing to your injury or limiting your performance. Strong, mobile, balanced runners are healthy runners.

Training guidance. We can help you understand appropriate training loads, recovery strategies, and how to modify your training when dealing with an injury.

Collaboration with other providers. If you’re working with a running coach, physical therapist, or other healthcare providers, we’re happy to collaborate to ensure you’re getting comprehensive, coordinated care.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Strength Athletes

Whether you’re into CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, or general strength training, the demands you place on your body are significant. Heavy loads, explosive movements, high training volumes—all of these require optimal body mechanics, joint mobility, and nervous system function.

Common Issues We See in Strength Athletes

Shoulder pain and impingement. Overhead pressing, heavy bench pressing, pull-ups, and Olympic lifts all place significant stress on the shoulder joint. If your shoulder blade isn’t moving properly, if your thoracic spine is restricted, or if your shoulder joint isn’t aligned well, you’re at increased risk for pain and injury.

We assess shoulder mechanics, thoracic spine mobility, rib position, and scapular (shoulder blade) movement to identify restrictions and imbalances. Adjustments to the thoracic spine, ribs, and shoulder, combined with mobility work and corrective exercises, can help you lift pain-free and reduce injury risk.

Lower back pain from squats and deadlifts. Squatting and deadlifting are foundational strength movements, but they also expose any weaknesses or imbalances in your body. Lower back pain during or after these lifts is often related to poor hip mobility, pelvic misalignment, core weakness, or improper bracing techniques.

We help you identify and address the root causes of your back pain so you can continue training safely and effectively. Often, improving hip and pelvic alignment makes a dramatic difference in how your back feels during heavy lifts.

Hip pain and hip impingement. Deep squatting requires excellent hip mobility. If your hip joint isn’t moving through its full range of motion, you might experience pinching, clicking, or pain in the front of your hip. This can be related to hip joint restrictions, tight hip flexors, weak glutes, or poor squat mechanics.

Chiropractic adjustments to the hip and pelvis, combined with mobility work and strengthening, can help restore pain-free, deep squatting ability.

Wrist and elbow pain. Front squats, clean and jerks, and heavy pressing can all create stress on your wrists and elbows. Pain in these areas is often related to poor wrist or elbow mobility, shoulder restrictions causing compensation, or improper technique.

We can assess and adjust your wrists, elbows, and shoulders to improve joint function and reduce pain.

Thoracic spine stiffness. A stiff mid-back (thoracic spine) affects almost every lift you do. It limits your ability to get into a good front rack position for front squats and cleans, it affects your overhead pressing mechanics, and it can contribute to shoulder and neck pain.

Thoracic spine adjustments and mobility work can make a significant difference in how you move and how you feel during training.

Rib subluxations. Heavy lifting, especially movements that involve significant trunk rotation or bracing, can sometimes cause ribs to shift out of their normal position. This can create sharp pain with breathing, twisting, or certain movements. Rib adjustments typically provide quick relief.

How We Help Strength Athletes at The Wellness Tribe

Movement screening and assessment. We assess your squat, hinge, pressing, and pulling patterns to identify restrictions, asymmetries, and movement compensations that might be limiting your performance or increasing injury risk.

Spinal and extremity adjustments. We ensure all the joints in your body—spine, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles—are moving optimally so you can lift with good mechanics and without compensation.

Mobility work. We identify specific mobility restrictions that are affecting your lifts and provide targeted strategies to improve them.

Strengthening and stability work. Strong, stable joints are healthy joints. We provide exercises to build strength in areas that need it and improve your overall stability.

Form coaching and technique guidance. While we’re not strength coaches, we can provide insights into how your body mechanics are affecting your lifting and offer suggestions for technique modifications that might reduce stress on painful or vulnerable areas.

Recovery strategies. We help you understand how to support your body’s recovery between training sessions so you can train hard and stay healthy.

The Performance Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Beyond injury prevention and management, many athletes notice tangible performance improvements with regular chiropractic care.

Improved Range of Motion and Flexibility

When your joints are aligned and moving properly, you can achieve better positions in your lifts and running stride. Better squat depth, better overhead position, better hip extension while running—all of these can improve with better joint mobility.

Research published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that chiropractic adjustments improved range of motion in athletes.

Enhanced Power Output and Strength

When your nervous system is functioning optimally and your body is aligned, you can recruit muscles more efficiently and generate more force. Some research suggests that chiropractic care may improve muscle strength and power output.

A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments resulted in increased voluntary muscle strength in the lower extremities.

Better Coordination and Body Awareness

Chiropractic adjustments affect proprioception—your body’s sense of where it is in space. Better proprioception means better coordination, balance, and movement control.

Faster Recovery

When your nervous system is balanced and your body is functioning well, you recover more effectively from training. This means you can train more consistently and make progress more quickly.

Reduced Injury Risk

By addressing imbalances, restrictions, and compensation patterns before they lead to injury, regular chiropractic care can help you stay healthy and training consistently.

A study in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders found that athletes receiving chiropractic care had fewer injuries and lost less training time to injury.

What to Expect: Performance-Based Chiropractic Care at The Wellness Tribe

When you come to The Wellness Tribe for performance-based care, we take a comprehensive, individualized approach.

Initial Assessment

We’ll start by understanding your training—what you’re doing, how often, what your goals are, and what challenges you’re facing. We want to know what movements or activities create pain, what you’ve tried so far, and what you’re hoping to achieve.

We’ll perform a thorough assessment of your movement patterns, joint mobility, spinal alignment, and nervous system function. For runners, this might include gait analysis. For strength athletes, we might assess your squat, deadlift, or overhead positions.

We’ll identify restrictions, imbalances, and areas of dysfunction that are contributing to your pain or limiting your performance.

Treatment and Care Plan

Based on our assessment, we’ll create a personalized care plan. This typically includes:

Chiropractic adjustments to restore optimal alignment and joint mobility throughout your spine and extremities.

Soft tissue work to release muscle tension and improve tissue quality.

Corrective exercises to strengthen weak areas and improve mobility in restricted areas.

Training modifications if needed to support your recovery while keeping you as active as possible.

Education on recovery strategies, injury prevention, and how to support your body’s optimal function.

Ongoing Support

How often you come in depends on your individual needs and goals. Some athletes come in regularly as part of their training routine—weekly or bi-weekly during heavy training phases. Others come in as needed when they’re dealing with pain or preparing for a competition.

We work with you to create a care plan that fits your schedule, your goals, and your body’s needs.

Real Stories from Denver Athletes

“I’ve been running for years, but I kept getting sidelined by IT band pain. I’d rest, it would get better, then as soon as I ramped up my mileage, it would come right back. After working with The Wellness Tribe, we discovered my pelvis was misaligned and my hips were really weak on one side. The adjustments combined with the strengthening exercises made a huge difference. I just ran my first marathon pain-free.” — Chris, Denver

“As a CrossFit athlete, I put my body through a lot. I started seeing The Wellness Tribe for regular maintenance care, and I’ve noticed I recover faster, I move better, and I’ve had fewer injuries. My overhead position improved significantly after we worked on my thoracic spine mobility.” — Jenna, Highlands Ranch

“I’m a powerlifter, and I was dealing with chronic lower back pain that was affecting my squat and deadlift. I’d tried everything—different belts, form tweaks, stretching. Working with Dr. Maggie, we found that my hips were really restricted and my pelvis was rotated. After a few weeks of adjustments and mobility work, my back pain decreased dramatically and my lifts actually improved.” — Marcus, Littleton

“I’m not a competitive athlete, but I love strength training and I want to keep doing it for as long as possible. Regular chiropractic care helps me stay healthy, move well, and keep progressing in the gym. It’s become an essential part of my routine.” — Sarah, Denver

The Research Behind Performance-Based Chiropractic Care

Athletic performance and chiropractic care have been studied extensively:

Improved range of motion. Multiple studies show that chiropractic adjustments can improve joint mobility and range of motion. A study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found significant improvements in hip and shoulder range of motion following chiropractic care.

Increased muscle strength. Research suggests chiropractic adjustments can increase voluntary muscle strength. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulation increased lower extremity muscle strength.

Enhanced athletic performance. Some studies show improvements in athletic performance measures. A study in Chiropractic & Osteopathy found that athletes receiving chiropractic care showed improvements in performance outcomes.

Reduced injury rates. Athletes receiving regular chiropractic care may experience fewer injuries. A study in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders found reduced injury rates and improved recovery times in athletes receiving chiropractic care.

Improved proprioception and coordination. Chiropractic adjustments can improve proprioceptive function. Research in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulation improved sensorimotor function.

Pain reduction in athletes. Chiropractic care is effective for managing common athletic injuries. A systematic review in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found evidence supporting chiropractic care for sports-related injuries.

Integrating Chiropractic Care Into Your Training

Chiropractic care works best when it’s integrated into your overall training and wellness routine, not treated as an isolated intervention.

During Base Building and General Training

Regular adjustments during base building phases can help ensure your body is moving optimally as you build fitness and strength. This is a great time to address any restrictions or imbalances before they become problems during higher-intensity training.

During High-Volume or Intense Training Phases

When you’re pushing hard—training for a race, preparing for a competition, or going through a challenging training block—your body is under significant stress. More frequent chiropractic care during these phases can support recovery and help you stay healthy.

During Taper and Competition Preparation

As you reduce training volume before a competition, chiropractic care can help ensure your body is functioning optimally. Many athletes find that adjustments help them feel “dialed in” and moving well going into competition.

During Injury Recovery

If you’re dealing with an injury, chiropractic care can be part of your rehabilitation plan, working alongside physical therapy, rest, and training modifications to support your recovery.

Year-Round Maintenance

Many athletes benefit from regular maintenance care even during off-seasons or recovery periods. This proactive approach helps prevent injuries before they start and keeps your body functioning at its best.

Beyond Adjustments: A Holistic Approach to Performance

At The Wellness Tribe, we take a holistic, vitalistic approach to athletic performance. While adjustments are a powerful tool, optimal performance comes from supporting your whole body and lifestyle.

Nutrition. What you eat fuels your training, supports recovery, and affects inflammation, energy levels, and body composition. We can provide guidance on nutrition strategies that support your performance goals.

Sleep. Sleep is when your body adapts to training stress, repairs tissues, and consolidates learning. Poor sleep undermines your training. We help you optimize sleep quality and quantity.

Stress management. Chronic stress affects your nervous system, hormones, recovery, and performance. We help you recognize signs of overtraining and provide strategies for managing stress.

Recovery strategies. We educate you on evidence-based recovery methods—active recovery, proper warm-ups and cool-downs, hydration, and more.

Training load management. We help you understand how to progress your training appropriately to minimize injury risk while maximizing adaptation.

Common Questions from Athletes

How often should I get adjusted?

This depends on your training volume, injury history, and goals. Some athletes benefit from weekly or bi-weekly adjustments during heavy training. Others come in monthly for maintenance. We’ll work with you to find the right frequency for your needs.

Should I get adjusted before or after training?

Both can be beneficial. Some athletes prefer adjustments before training or competition to optimize movement and nervous system function. Others prefer post-training adjustments to support recovery. We can help you determine what works best for you.

Can I train the same day I get adjusted?

Usually, yes. Most people feel great after adjustments and can train normally. Occasionally, if we do significant soft tissue work or address a particularly restricted area, we might suggest modifying your training that day.

Will chiropractic care make me faster/stronger?

Chiropractic care optimizes how your body functions. When your body is aligned, moving well, and your nervous system is functioning optimally, you’re able to perform at your best. Many athletes notice improvements in performance, but individual results vary.

I’m injured. Should I stop training completely?

Not necessarily. In many cases, you can continue training with modifications while you recover. We’ll work with you to determine what’s safe and appropriate for your specific situation.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can schedule directly with us. If you’re working with other healthcare providers or coaches, we’re happy to collaborate with them.

When to Seek Chiropractic Care

Consider scheduling a consultation if you’re:

Dealing with a nagging injury that won’t fully resolve

Experiencing pain during or after training

Noticing asymmetries or imbalances in your movement

Hitting a performance plateau

Preparing for a race or competition

Wanting to optimize your performance and prevent injuries

Recovering from an injury and want to return to training safely

Looking for a holistic approach to athletic performance

You don’t need to be injured to benefit from chiropractic care. Many athletes see us regularly as part of their proactive performance and injury prevention strategy.

You may have heard the phrase “My chiropractor saved my life” and thought to yourself, “Well that sounds a little dramatic” – but what if it wasn’t that far off from the truth?

When it comes to chiropractic work, there are so many different techniques, skill levels, and practitioners out there that it’s hard to know who and what to trust. There are many different schools of thought that chiropractors follow, and here at The Wellness Tribe, we follow the school of vitalistic chiropractic.

At its core, vitalistic chiropractic is a part of the Eastern medicine school of thought, which focuses on preventative medicine that “seeks to heal the entire body by allowing the nervous system to communicate without disruption by removing blockages.” Vitalistic chiropractic does this by adjusting the spinal vertebrae to allow the body to naturally heal and align itself.

In this article we’re going to go more in-depth into what vitalistic chiropractic is, how it can help heal your body in a natural way through alignment, and how this can translate into your overall well-being.

What is Vitalistic Chiropractic?

The official definition of vitalism is “the theory that the origin and phenomena of life are dependent on a force or principle distinct from purely chemical or physical forces.” This definition in and of itself is the reason why we practice vitalistic chiropractic. Like we mentioned above, vitalistic chiropractic work is rooted in the Eastern medicine tradition, which seeks to heal the entire body, rather than heal individual parts like in Western medicine, which is largely a mechanic mode of healing. The premise in which Western medicine relies on is that there are different parts of the body, such as the nervous system and the digestive system, and each system is healed by someone who specializes in that area. Western medicine is largely reactionary, which is sometimes needed in cases of injury or emergency surgery, such as an appendectomy.

How Vitalistic Chiropractic Can Heal Your Body Naturally

Eastern medicine and vitalistic chiropractic on the other hand is based in preventative care, which focuses on preventing health problems before they happen. Like we mentioned above, vitalistic chiropractic helps to heal the body by allowing the nervous system to communicate to the rest of your body without disruption. This is done by removing blockages throughout your body by adjusting each individual vertebrae in order for the body to align in a more natural way, which in turn allows the body to heal itself. When your body is out of alignment, specifically your spine, this is called subluxation, which reduces your nervous system’s capacity to heal itself and therefore reduces your overall health and well-being.

Vitalistic chiropractic is one of many philosophies in the chiropractic field, which in turn are shaping the future essence of this industry. According to Ankur Tayal, philosophy department chair and faculty member at Life Chiropractic College West, what lies at the center of each of these emerging philosophies is “removing tension from your nervous system so that your body can function better” specifically when we’re dealing with both inside and outside stressors and tension. Dr. Tayal also goes on to further explain the concept of subluxation, which refers to misalignments of the neck and spine, which can cause problems without necessarily causing pain or discomfort.

Why Alignment is Important for Your Overall Wellbeing

If we haven’t convinced you why you might benefit from vitalistic chiropractic yet, keep reading! According to Dr. Tayal, your body’s misalignment can have an effect on your nervous system and how well it functions, which in turn can have an effect on how well your overall body functions (aka your overall well-being). This is why putting in the work to ensure your body is always aligned is so important, which is where we come in! From our perspective, there are individual systems in our body that we need in order to survive, although it is only if they interact in just the right way that we are truly aligned, or in other words “healthy.”

Vitalistic chiropractors, like us, focus on healing through subluxation modalities, which allows the body to move past blockages and heal itself in a more natural way. Vitalistic chiropractic rests on the premise that our body is greater than the sum of its parts, which lends to the idea that the cause of pain or discomfort might not correlate to the exact location of the pain. This is why healing your nervous system is often the first step in a vitalistic chiropractic appointment.

Welcome to The Wellness Tribe where we offer chiropractic for kids in Denver.

Here, we seek to answer all the questions you may have as you research your child’s journey into chiropractic, and whether it is a good choice for your family.

Firstly, pediatric chiropractic begs us to ask, is chiropractic care good for kids?

I love this question and it is one I hear often as a pediatric chiropractor!

Dr. Maggie McInnes, Pediatric Chiropractor, The Wellness Tribe, S Pearl St, Denver, CO

The response always brings me back to the premise of chiropractic and the foundation of which our services stand on.

Chiropractors are specialized and trained in eliminating interference between the brain and the body. If this primal channel (the nervous system) is clear, our overall health and function is optimized. Chiropractic is about living life to your highest potential and not always measured by symptoms or pain (although these are definite signs that communication is hindered).

The exponential growth and myriad of experiences an infant to baby – to child – to teenager undergoes is in itself a form of stress on the body.

In fact, It wasn’t until I went to chiropractic college myself, that I was introduced to pediatric chiropractic. Afterall I didn’t receive my first adjustment until I was 19 years old. Many people operate under the pretense that chiropractic care is for use when the body is expressing pain or symptoms. In actuality, life itself can be the reason to get an adjustment and get back in alignment.

So, are chiropractors safe for babies then, too?

Birth is a stressful process affecting mom AND baby. Especially if the baby is “assisted” out of the body (i.e. c-section, forcep or vacuum delivery, or even manual pulling by the birth practitioner). And, oftentimes birth trauma, big or small, can result in difficulty with latch in breastfeeding, issues with reflux and colic, trouble sleeping, the list goes on.

Later on, when your little one is learning to walk (and falls a zillion times) – that impacts his structure and nervous system communication.

The same goes for the toddler on his strider bike crashing in the bushes and children entering the world of athletics (and here in Denver and Colorado, all kiddos are active).

Entering school layers on emotional and mental stress.

What I’m getting at here is: experiences that are completely normal and common, may also be stressful in a negative way on the structure and function of a child’s body and mind.

While some of my pediatric practice members do start care because they are having health challenges, equally as many come for wellness checks.

It is far easier to support a healthy growing child, than to fix a broken adult.

Children should be checked periodically (a minimum of once monthly) for vertebral subluxation (interference to the spinal structure). Integrating the traumas, be they physical, emotional, or chemical, from a young age (many of my clients are being adjusted in utero and again 2 weeks postpartum) ensures that their nervous system is communicating at optimal speed and clarity.

Children who are regularly seen by a chiropractor express robust health, recover more easily and quickly from childhood illnesses, and go on to have excellent performance in athletics.

Really it’s a no brainer, why would you not want to give your child the best opportunity at health and well-being BEFORE he or she has pain or symptoms?

So the other concern parents want addressed before taking the leap into pediatric chiropractic care is: is it safe and when may a child start to be adjusted. The answer is: it’s INCREDIBLY safe. We start babies as early as hours after birth.

The adjustment force is the pressure of your finger on your eyeball: very gentle.

The amount of force of the adjustment directly correlates with the size and age of the child. Many times in younger children, I use an instrument that has an adjustable force application that is very light. Most babies and children find care relaxing and enjoyable.

All chiropractors are trained to work with children, however a population of us who are truly passionate about this demographic, like us at The Wellness Tribe, seek higher postdoctoral education to offer high quality pediatric chiropractic.

We continually are educating ourselves on not only analysis and adjusting techniques, but also working with special populations (children on the spectrum, with special needs, etc).

If you are interested in care for your child and looking to find a pediatric chiropractor, I highly recommend using the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association as a resource to find it’s members all over the globe: a location nearest you!

As a local family Denver pediatric chiropractor, I welcome you to The Wellness Tribe where we care for all with extra training and love for pediatric chiropractic care, adjusting prenatal women, and working with those in full-on motherhood.

I wasn’t born bilingual, but I can’t imagine living any other way now. (Lea este artículo en español, aquí.)

Knowing and understanding two languages allows you in a way to “see” another color… one that wouldn’t be there without the other.

As a bilingual individual (I speak Spanish), I think it’s important for me to touch this topic. Nowadays, I feel like the bilingual population is growing more and more, or is it just me? We are lucky. Our children are lucky, and I see it every day in my son when we speak to each other in both languages!

It got me to thinking it would be a great time to document a list of all the health advantages of being bilingual. So, here goes…

Creativity Increment

Our vocabulary helps us express our understanding of the world. There are different ways that other languages express concepts, using metaphors that just don’t translate from one to the other, making space in the brain for more creative ways to communicate.

Better Memory

Study results from psychologists prove that knowing many languages improves episodic and semantic memory at all age levels. Boom.

Perspective

Your perspective expands when you learn or grow up with different languages. It brings you deeper into understanding cultures and traditions. Language is the most intimate and expressive product of cultures. It helps you understand and appreciate other points of view. In return, this helps you learn more about yourself too.

Social Exercise

It is also proven that your social skills grow from learning new languages. Why you may ask? You can’t learn the language without practicing it with other people. This gets you to crack your shell and branch off. So, get on out there and visit new places with new languages near and far.

Speaking of…

Traveling

Bilingualism gets you out there! Traveling is very good for your health as it gets your mind active and expanded (yesssssss). Put your new language to use! Or, continue practicing one of your languages. You can “travel” locally too… it doesn’t have to be too far!

Brain Aging

Practicing or learning two or more languages slows the aging of the brain. It doesn’t matter what age you startt. It’s never too late to begin!

Stress And Stroke Recovery

It can also save you from a stroke! The risk of reduced mental capacity is lowered after having a stroke because knowing two or more languages strengthens your interconnected brain.

Employment

It’s incredible how many jobs require bilingual employees. So if you want a better chance of getting the job and stop worrying about the bills, new languages can save you.

Critical Thinking

People relate learning a new language to cracking a code. Your brain begins to activate parts so that you can understand a strange message. The improvement of creativity to ‘crack the code’ helps you elsewhere in life too.

Disadvantages?

Yes, the disadvantages to being bilingual can be surprising. Sometimes it becomes trouble when we know a word in one language but we can’t think of it in the other and vise versa! This can cause people to mix the languages or even come up with words that don’t exist. Grammar, writing and speaking a new language can often be more difficult than reading, but just keep on practicing!

“To have another language is to possess a second soul.”

-Charlemagne

No importa a qué edad comiences.

-Charlemagne
